Dean's Welcome

Welcome to the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University. We invite you to explore our website and learn more about our innovative programs and real-world opportunities.

There is no better time to consider a career in journalism or professional communications. Our industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation – a communications “revolution.” Newspapers are moving to the Web, broadcasts are being podcast, advertisers are using social media to target their messages, and the media consumer is in the driver’s seat. No longer passive observers, readers and viewers are engaged in creating content and shaping the public dialogue around issues that matter to them.

Change is always scary. And no doubt, this is an uncertain and unsettling time. But it is also a time of great opportunity – an opportunity to help chart the future direction of our industry and redefine the role of communications in the digital age.

The WVU Reed College of Media is leading the way with a new journalism curriculum that teaches students how to write, report and produce new stories across media platforms. Students are also working side by side with industry professionals to help make journalism relevant to a modern audience by exploring technology solutions, design-thinking strategies and new business models.

We are also preparing our students to be engaged citizens who can help solve the world’s biggest problems. Our advertising /public relations curriculum teaches students how to be skilled advertising and public relations professionals by using their expertise to enhance and improve local communities and society at large.

While no one can predict the future, we firmly believe our students have the skills and creative abilities to succeed in a dynamic professional environment. Our graduates work for top news organizations and strategic communications agencies and at major corporations and non-profits.

We recognize that when it comes to selecting a college and an academic program, today’s students have a variety of options. But the WVU Reed College of Media offers something special. We are preparing our students to be industry professionals and leaders of the communications revolution.

Join us and become a part of the future.
