Delete, Ban, Cancel: Public Understanding of Free Speech and Censorship

Tuesday, September 20, at 7 p.m.
Mountainlair Ballrooms

This event, co-sponsored by the WVU Reed College of Media and WVU College of Law, is free and open to the public. This is the culminating event in the "Year of Reckoning," a series of events hosted by the WVU Reed College of Media to raise awareness of First Amendment freedoms and engage the University and local communities on the topic.

Public understanding of what free speech and censorship mean has evolved over recent years outside of constitutional protections and the ways in which the Internet has enabled a rise in the expression of false, offensive, harmful and even dangerous expression on digital platforms. This panel will discuss how popular (mis)understandings of “free speech” and “censorship" are eroding consensus in what is — and what isn’t — protected speech and will help unpack the tensions between tech platforms, the constitution, the regulatory environment and the public. They will explore the complexities of what may be the central challenge in media of our time: What IS free speech and who decides — tech platforms, the government or some other entity?
