Mid-Year Academy

Every year, about 10% of our freshman class finds themselves on probation after their first semester. Students experience a temporary setback for a variety of reasons – and this fall has had its share of unique challenges.

Students are placed on academic probation when the level of their academic performance is endangering their opportunity to earn a degree from the University. Academic recovery IS possible. Students successfully bounce back from a rough start every year.

The College of Media advising team is available to help you get back on track to academic success. We encourage you to seek assistance early, and we are available to give you that needed push or advice to move you toward achieving your academic goals and objectives.

Next Steps

Mid-Year Academy is designed to help you make an academic plan for Spring 2024. You will work with your advisor to adjust your spring schedule, identify behaviors or barriers that impacted your fall semester performance and connect with campus resources to support your academic recovery.

Step 1: Complete the College of Media Mid-Year Academy Module. If you have questions about the module, please email Gina Martino Dahlia, assistant dean of academic affairs, at gina.dahlia@mail.wvu.edu.

Step 2: Once you’ve completed the module, your academic advisor will contact you to schedule an advising appointment. Appointments will begin the week of January 1. You must meet with your advisor on Zoom before classes begin on January 8. (Please note that due to the holidays, you might not hear from your advisor until January 2).

Step 3: You will meet with your academic advisor via Zoom to review your Academic Success Contract and course schedule for Spring 2024. Please download the contract and complete it prior to meeting with your advisor. Your advisor will help you complete any missing information.

Step 4: Digitally sign your Academic Success Contract, save the completed contract on your computer and email it to your academic advisor by Tuesday, January 2, at 11:59 p.m.

We hope you will take full advantage of this opportunity for academic recovery. We know that with support from your advisor and by using WVU resources you can be in good standing at the end of the Spring 2024 term.
