Essay Competition seeks entries

Hosted by the Center for Political and Economic Thought at Saint Vincent College, the Douglas B. Rogers Conditions of a Free Society Essay Competition is open to all full-time undergraduate students currently registered in any field of study at a four-year college or university in the United States or Canada.

The competition is designed to honor the memory of the late Douglas B. Rogers (Ph.D., George Mason University), a young scholar of great promise who died tragically, and to encourage scholarly discussion of individual freedom, limited constitutional government, free market economics, and the philosophical and moral foundations of America and the West.

More specifically, submissions should address the following prompt by Frédéric Bastiat: “The state is the great fiction by which everyone endeavors to live at the expense of everyone else.”

WV Legislature Internship Program seeking applicants

The West Virginia Legislature Internship Programs has 51 openings for students to assist specific senators or delegates for one week during the regular 60-day session.

Participants are assigned to a legislator who assists in explaining the legislative process. They attend meetings and public hearings and sit on the floor during daily sessions. They aid legislators with issue research, constituent requests and other tasks.

Eligible students are full-time sophomores through seniors who have had at least one course in government.

Boston Globe seeks summer interns

The Boston Globe is looking for students to fill a 12-week, paid, summer internship.

Students must have previous daily newspaper experience. Most of the students will work as general assignment reporters while others will be assigned to spots, living/arts and business. Other positions include photography and graphics departments.

The students will be full-time employees from Memorial Day through Labor Day. They will be paid a weekly wage, and shifts will vary. They will participate in weekly meetings and have a writing coach.

Internships and Student Award Contest available with American Horse Publications

The 2013 American Horse Publications (AHP) Student Internship Listings and applications are now available online at for college students who have an interest in horses and are seeking a career in equine publishing media.

Information on the website includes how to apply, guidelines for the student intern and the AHP participating member, and a listing of the internships offered. Each listing includes the publication or company name, a brief description, types of internships offered, availability/duration, requirements, information on compensation and housing, and contact information. Students apply directly to the AHP member, who will choose the applicants that best meet their needs. AHP members may hire more than one intern.

AHP Student Award Contest 
AHP Student Award Contest will award up to three $750 travel awards to attend the AHP seminar in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on June 20-23, 2013. Travel Award winners have an opportunity to meet leading equine publishing professionals and discuss career possibilities during the three days of educational sessions and related activities. One Travel Award winner will be selected at the seminar as the 2013 Student Award winner and will receive a cash award of $1,000. Students are eligible to enter the contest if they are a high school senior or an undergraduate college student during the 2012-2013 college year before graduation. All qualified applicants receive a complimentary Student annual membership, a complimentary Student registration certificate for the 2013 seminar and a critique of their resume.
