Ad Club members place second in regional AAF competition

Earlier this month, students in WVU’s Ad Club earned second place in the regional American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition.

This year the client was Pizza Hut, and the WVU team participated as part of a new Virtual District with AAF, pitching their integrated plans book during a 20-minute presentation, followed by a Q&A. The students that actively worked on the NSAC Pizza Hut campaign include Valerie Bennett, Josh Bryant-Gainer, Chris Chow, Lindsey Folco, Charity Junkins, Rueben Lee, Ben Lobosco, Ryan McNamara, Nikki Ryder, Chris Schad, and Toni Yelenic. College of Media receives grant for water journalism project

Inspired by the desire for more transparent information about West Virginia’s water sources, the West Virginia University Reed College of Media is undertaking a new journalism project supported by a grant from the Online News Association.


The $35,000 micro-grant is part of ONA’s competitive Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education in 2014 to encourage journalism programs to experiment with new ways of providing news and information and to seed collaborative news experiments in living labs – their communities.

WVU News wins national Emmy Award

The special edition episode, All Things Social Media, was produced by Corey Sanchez of Sissonville, West Virginia, and focused on the Craigslist killer, cyber bullying, cyber stalking and Snapchat 

advertising. Sanchez accepted the award on behalf of WVU News on April 23 at the 36th Annual College Television Awards Gala in Los Angeles, California. Sanchez, who graduated in December 2014, won an all-expense-paid trip to LA to accept the award.

The same newscast earned second place in the category of Television Newscast (airing three days per week or less) in the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Festival of Media Arts. The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international refereed exhibition of faculty creative activities and a national showcase for student works.

Get a 'sneak peek' of Evansdale Crossing

The University and Morgantown communities are invited to a “sneak peek” of Evansdale Crossing, West Virginia University’s new student-centered 5-story facility on the Evansdale Campus opening in late fall, at 2 p.m. Friday, April 24. The event will be held on the green quad near the construction site and Engineering PRT station.

Free parking is available at the Creative Arts Center, a short walk from the facility.

Guest speakers include Provost Joyce McConnell, Dean of the Reed College of Media Maryanne Reed, Fresh Hospitality entrepreneur Doug VanScoy and Deputy Mayor Marti Shamberger.

Students give back through CreatAthon event

On Friday, April 17, CreateAthon@WVU kicked off its very first event on West Virginia University’s campus. The 24-hour, work-around-the-clock event consisted of 35 WVU Reed College of Media students and threeCreateathon1 professional mentors who worked free-of-charge to create strategic multimedia marketing materials for three Morgantown area nonprofit organizations. The creative blitz began on 3 p.m. Friday and ended at 3 p.m. on Saturday. 

The selected nonprofits for the first ever CreateAthon@WVU were Literacy Volunteers of Monongalia 

\& Preston Counties (LVMPC), Mountaineer Area RobiticS (MARS) and Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center (MCCAC). These nonprofits provided the student teams with a list of materials they needed to advance their mission. Desired worked ranged from print advertisements, logo rebranding, commercial development and digital media campaign. The value of the completed work was estimated at a value of $45,000 from this 24-hour marathon event.

Knight Foundation funds College's Innovator-in-Residence program

To build on efforts to introduce journalism students to media professionals who are leading experimentation and change in their organizations, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is helping to expand West Virginia University Reed College of Media’s Innovator-in-Residence program. The $200,000 grant will add to the college’s ongoing efforts to create a culture of experimentation and innovation and encourage change in journalism education.

Over the next two years, the college will continue to embed innovators from national organizations into media classes and expand the program to add regional innovators. These Innovators-in-Residence will be partnered with college faculty to co-teach experimental courses, exposing students to emerging media technology and creating new practices for the industry.

The innovators will also work toward specific projects with students. Each project is designed to solve a specific problem or emerging challenge in the industry — from beta testing new economic models and content monetization to experimenting with new tools and story forms. The overarching mission of the program is to disrupt conventional practices in journalism that tend to inhibit experimentation. The program will share project results in real time and familiarize industry and faculty participants with rapid change and risk-taking.

WVU Foundation seeks communications intern--paid opportunity!

The West Virginia University Foundation has a paid internship ($9 per hour) available for summer 2015 and the 2015-16 academic year. The intern must be a West Virginia University student who is able to work 15-20 hours this summer and 10-15 hours during the academic year. They will work around the intern’s class schedule.

The intern will assist with the communications and marketing efforts of the Foundation. This includes, but it not limited to, writing news releases and articles for media, newsletters and other publications; writing for the Web; assisting with internal communications; and helping with content development, design and layout for electronic communication, social/digital media and advertisements.

Strong writing skills are a must. Knowledge of digital photography and design software is a plus.

Student Enhancement Awards Application Period Extended

Because so many internship sites are taking longer than usual to make their selections for the upcoming summer, the WVU Reed College of Media will extend the application period for this year’s Student Enhancement Awards. THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO APRIL 30, 2015 AT 5:00 PM.

The Student Enhancement Fund provides small awards to students completing a major media market internship or a major-related study abroad program.

Awards are typically between $500 and $1000 and the selection process is competitive.
