Professor Beeson's interactive website receives honorable mention at AEJMC competition

The Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication (AEJMC) is praising Associate Professor Joel Beeson’s online project War Poems. The interactive website received an honorable mention in the Individual/Team/Single Class website category at this year’s AEJMC Best of the Web/Best of Digital competition.

Beeson’s website is based on a book by the same name published in 1919 by Ada and Ethel Peters, two sisters who were students at the West Virginia Collegiate Institute, now West Virginia State University. Unlike conventional history texts, War Poems provides the perspective of two young African-American females in southern West Virginia and their views on the nation’s race issues, the war and the world at large.

The “Best of the Web/Best of Digital” competition is an annual Web and app design contest for members of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication. There are four categories to accommodate submissions from individuals and small groups to department- and institution-wide projects. Judging is done by Web and app design professionals and academics with a background in Web and app design and technology. A complete list of winners can be found online.

WVU College of Media launches water quality reporting project with two new Innovators-in-Residence

This fall, the West Virginia University Reed College of Media will add two new media innovators to its roster of experts to help launch a new reporting project focused on the region’s water quality issues.

Keefe and Mistich are the College’s newest Innovators-in-Residence, a program that was recently expanded with the help of $200,000 in support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The additional funding will allow the College to expand its existing Innovator-in-Residence program over the next two years, embedding innovators from both national and regional organizations. These Innovators-in-Residence are partnered with college faculty to co-teach experimental courses, exposing students to emerging technology and creating new practices for the industry.

This fall, Keefe and Mistich will partner with Teaching Assistant Professor Emily Corio and Associate Professor John Temple to launch “Stream Lab,” a community reporting project focused on water quality. Students enrolled in the experimental journalism class will conduct research using sensors to increase public engagement around contaminated water issues in West Virginia.

West Virginia journalism pioneers provide inspiration, opportunities for WVU students

In honor of two West Virginia journalism pioneers, two new endowments have been established at West Virginia University Reed College of Media, leaving a legacy of inspiration and generosity for aspiring young students.

Robinson earned her first professional byline when she was a student at Welch High School in southern West Virginia. She scooped an interview with famous aviator Amelia Earhart for her school newspaper. The Welch Daily News picked up the story and hired Robinson upon her graduation. But her reporting career really took off in 1942, when the Charleston, West Virginia, AP bureau needed a wartime replacement reporter. Robinson jumped at the opportunity – making history as their first female reporter.

She returned to WVU and eventually earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the College of Media (then the P.I. Reed School of Journalism) in 1948. She went on to work for McGraw-Hill Publishing; the AP in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and as a public information officer for the New Mexico Department of Health and the National Public Health Service in Washington, D.C.

Collaborative project tackles the challenges of reporting across racial and economic divides

Selma, Alabama. The Edmund Pettus Bridge. The words conjure up the worst images of the civil rights battles of the 60s.

But March 7, 1965, Bloody Sunday, when dozens of blacks were beaten, and 17 hospitalized as they marched into Dallas County in support of voting rights, was also a turning point in the crusade, bringing worldwide attention to the campaign that spawned passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Fifty years after that march, journalism students from Morgan State University – an urban, historically black university – joined peers from West Virginia University – a predominantly white university in a rural state – to create Bridging Selma, a unique social justice reporting project to help promote a critically needed conversation about race in America.
