Springfield Business Journal seeks page designer/photographer

Springfield Business Journal, an award-winning weekly niche publication in southwest Missouri, is seeking an editorial photographer and page designer. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and expertise in typography is preferred. Quality of subject photography is emphasized. The position offers competitive pay and benefits, including health, life and 401(k). Send résumé and photo/design samples by May 14 to Eric Olson, editor, eolson@sbj.net or PO Box 1365, Springfield, MO 65801.

Laying out the paper and taking photographs for stories are the chief concerns. This involves: creating dummies each week for the paper, thus determining page count and general ad placement; filing press run orders with the printer; typesetting and placing images; scheduling, photographing, and preparing images for stories; producing other graphics (charts, graphs, illustrations); correcting proofed pages; creating concepts and mock pages to improve the aesthetics of the paper each week; and working with the editors and reporters to create and hone coverage ideas. The bulk of these processes is impacted by the suggestions and criticism of the rest of the staff, just as the rest of the staff expects the same for the designer/photographer. Additionally, the designer/photographer archives text and images and supplies the online reporter with the text and images sized for the Web site.
