New Student Orientation guide positions available

Student Guide Position

Goal:
The goal of each student guide position is to organize and coordinate evening activities for incoming students and their guests who are attending orientation. These evening activities typically include greeting participants at the Coliseum, hosting them on a bus that takes them to a residence hall, assisting with evening check-in, taking students to the Student Recreation Center, hosting a movie night and/or games, and facilitating group icebreakers and group conversations. Student Guides will also be expected to answer any questions orientation participants may have concerning the orientation program.

Coliseum Greeting (5:00- 8:00 p.m.)-stand outside the Coliseum blue gate and greet families as they arrive to Orientation. Be sure to smile and introduce yourself. Explain that they will ride a bus to the residence hall and their car should stay parked at the Coliseum. There is no overnight parking available at the Residence Hall. Remind them to take everything they will need with them to the Residence Hall. Dinner is on their own and not included as part of the program. Families are welcome to grab a bite to eat and return to the Coliseum during the hours of shuttle service. A list of restaurants within walking distance is also available at Check-in. An Admissions Counselor will also be available to assist.

Bus Host (same times as listed above)-You will be hosting participants as they ride the shuttle bus to the residence hall. Be sure to introduce yourself and welcome them to Orientation. During the trip, you can point out WVU buildings and talk about the Orientation program. You may also want to mention that students and their guests have the opportunity to go the Student Recreation Center (closes at 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 p.m. on Sunday. The pool closes one hour earlier). Additionally, we’ll be having an ice cream social at 8:00 p.m. Once they arrive at the residence hall, they’ll check in for their room and check-in for Orientation the next morning. Parents and students will be housed separately.

Check-in (same times as listed above)-As families arrive to Orientation, you will check-in them into the program. You’ll give them a copy of their receipt as well as the breakfast meal tickets. Also be sure to give them the list of activities that are taking place in the residence hall as well as restaurants that are close by. Direct them to the Conference Service staff to get room keys.

Rec Center (weeknights at 7 and Sundays at 6)-You’ll meet participants in the residence hall and walk to the Rec Center. You don’t have to “work-out” with participants, just let me know where you’ll be. Designate a meeting place if the participants would like to return to the residence hall with you. Be sure to walk around and mingle with participants. Some participants will go on their own. You’ll want to leave by 7:45 p.m. to be back in time for the ice cream social.

Ice Cream Social (8:00 p.m.)-All student guides will assist with the ice cream social and encourage participants to interact. Lead icebreaker activities for both students and parents. Games will also be available as well as a movie.

Movie (9 p.m.)-The movie should start at approximate 9 p.m. If icebreaker activities/games are going well, start the movie later. Check to see what participants want to do. One student guide will stay with the group until the end of
