REPLY TO: POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT – INVESTIGATOR

The Federal Public Defender Office for the Northern District of West Virginia is accepting applications for the position of Investigator for our Clarksburg office. The Federal Public Defender Office operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. §3006A, to provide defense services for indigent persons in federal criminal cases and related matters in federal court.
Primary Job Duties: Provide all investigative support for cases pending at the district court level. Locate and interview victims, witnesses and law enforcement personnel. Prepare detailed and accurate memoranda of interviews. Recreate crime scenes by measuring, photographing and sketching. Review and analyze discovery and other case documentation. Locate public and private records such as criminal records, medical records, and records of court proceedings. Assist attorneys at hearings and trials by evaluating testimony, coordinating witnesses and documentation; and serving FRCP Rule 17 subpoenas. Investigate client background for medical, psychological, criminal or other areas that may justify a departure or variance from otherwise applicable Sentencing Guidelines. This position requires resourcefulness and creativity, and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications:

Preferred candidate will have the ability to empathize with a client base oftentimes comprised of individuals who are poor, uneducated, exposed to violence and drug and alcohol abuse, and who are under intense pressure while facing serious federal criminal charges. For this reason, the position is open to more than just those with a law enforcement or criminal justice background. Those with backgrounds in journalism, social work or the medical field, etc. will be considered as well.

The candidate must be a college graduate possessing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and have general and specialized experience reflecting the ability to perform the Primary Job Duties listed above in an exemplary fashion. Must be computer literate with experience using WordPerfect and the Internet. Applicants must be United States citizens and have a valid driver’s license. Continued employment subject to background and security check. Final hiring is contingent on the availability of funding and approval from the Office of Defender Services.
Starting salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position includes regular United States Government benefits, to include annual and sick leave, health and life insurance, and a retirement system. Salary payable only through direct deposit. Equal Opportunity Employer.
