Experienced reporter/writer wanted at The Chronicle of Higher Education

Description:

The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks an experienced reporter to cover academic rigor in higher education. This reporter will write stories that examine key questions facing colleges about their enduring value, including: How much are students learning? How should the worth of a college education be measured? How should academic quality be improved? This reporter will also oversee our coverage of college teaching and curriculum, as well as research on higher education, and must be able to write vivid stories from inside college classrooms. He or she will examine day-to-day issues facing college faculty, who are juggling competing pressures from students, administrators, lawmakers, and the public at a time when class sizes are rising, resources are diminishing, and demands for accountability are high.

The ideal candidate will have the proven ability to write analytically and to tell compelling stories about complicated topics. The person should be able to navigate nuanced discussions to identify broad trends and creative story ideas that will help readers grapple with big-picture questions and see how theories play out on campuses and in classrooms. He or she should demonstrate skill at filing short, tight news items on deadline while juggling longer-term narrative stories and analytical pieces.
