General Description:

The Graduate Assistant serves an essential role in the Student Communication Center, as well as the office of Undergraduate Student Recruitment. The Graduate Assistant must demonstrate exceptional leadership ability, customer service skills, and maintain a consistent enthusiasm for West Virginia University.

The Graduate Assistant will assist in daily management of the Communication Center, as well as assist student counselors and team leaders in maintaining and initiating goal-setting and goal evaluation. In addition to traditional Student Counselor responsibilities, the Graduate Assistant will also assist with setting work schedules and staff meetings.

This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, exceptional leadership ability, proficient computer skills, and a demonstrated commitment to the Student Communication Center and West Virginia University. Compensation includes a tuition waiver and stipend.

Responsibilities:

  • To assist Team Leaders in initiating and maintaining team goals through constant communication with the team leaders and each team.
  • To assist the Program Coordinator in all manners of office maintenance, scheduling, training, etc.
  • Assist Team Leaders in maintaining current and detailed team information for frequent meetings with Program Coordinator and team leaders.
  • To serve as a resource to all Student Counselors via mentoring and training sessions.
  • To represent West Virginia University at all times in a professional and personable manner.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in a WVU graduate program and maintain full-time graduate status.
  • Must have a positive and professional attitude and be courteous at all times.
  • Must possess exceptional leadership and communication skills.
  • Must be able to adhere to a weekly schedule to assist in the daily supervision of Student Counselors.
  • Must be able to work both independently and within a group in a detail oriented work environment.
  • Previous experience with Admissions or New Student Services preferred.
