Qualifications: The successful candidates must have excellent reporting, interviewing, writing and electronic newsgathering skills to produce substantive radio/television stories for a statewide and regional audience. The candidates also must be able to maintain high journalistic standards of fairness under deadline pressure and must work collaboratively with others in a multi-media newsroom. Two years’ reporting experience required. Previous experience with posting to the web and using social media is highly desirable. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or an appropriate combination of education and experience. These positions require working irregular hours, extended days, weekends and holidays.

Recent SOJ grad receives Young Botanist Award from the Botanical Society of America

Yeager, who graduated in May, received a Young Botanist Award, given by the Botanical Society of America. The purpose of these awards is to offer individual recognition to outstanding graduating seniors in the plant sciences and to encourage their participation in the Botanical Society of America.

This is the first award given to a journalist-botanist by the society, emphasizing the importance of communicating plant science to the public. Yeager’s academic background and investigative approach made her well qualified to write accurate and engaging articles about botanical subjects for her journalism internships, utilizing her interdependent journalism major and biology minor.

The Times West Virginian seeks multimedia reporter

The Times West Virginian, a seven-day, award-winning newspaper named West Virginia Press Association’s Newspaper of the Year for the past six consecutive years in Fairmont, W.Va., has an immediate opening for a full- time multimedia reporter. The reporter will be responsible for covering several municipalities, small town meetings, breaking news and general assignments. Strong consideration will be given to the candidate who is gifted in translating “government-ese” and relating to the reader why the story is important.

The candidate should have multimedia experience, including basic photography, videography, social media and be able to make simple updates to a website. The candidate should have a journalism background with a degree in
journalism or a related field. Experience is preferred. Benefits include paid vacation, health and dental insurance and 401(k). Salary is based on experience. Candidates should be from North Central West Virginia or willing to

Clay Battelle High School Boosters seek student to help with sports media guide

The Clay Battelle High School Booster Group is looking for a student to design and deliver 200 copies of an established sports media guide. The guide will be approximately 125 pages and will include business and personal ads, interviews and photos with coaches and athletes. The Clay Battelle High School booster group will collect the advertisements and ads. The job applicant will conduct interviews and take photos at Clay Battelle High School located in Blacksville, WV on August 3, 2012 at 6 pm. The media guide must be completed by August 17, 2012. Hometown classmates tackle national media

Growing up in the same town, Shay Maunz, Jamie McCracken and Ashton Marra shared many milestones – birthdays, prom, high school graduation. But they never shared their dreams of becoming media professionals until they came to WVU.

“I don’t think we ever talked about our careers, but we all assumed that we would go into journalism,” said Marra. “It’s kind of strange that we’ve all done such big things with it.”

WV Uncovered seeks VISTA member

The West Virginia Uncovered Project seeks an Americorps VISTA Member to coordinate digital media literacy training and the promotion of healthy information systems in West Virginia communities. The position is an exciting opportunity to work with the Uncovered Project as we work to ensure the health of community media and strive to promote engagement with civic life.

The successful candidate will assist the Uncovered coordinator in planning and executing digital media literacy workshops for community media, state educators and community members. He/she will assist in the study of the state’s communities and their information needs and help facilitate public contributions to community information. Americorps VISTA members work to increase educational and economic capacity that aids communities in combating poverty.

Campaign communications intern wanted

The communications intern will assist the Sue Thorn for Congress 2012 campaign in establishing positive media relations and promoting the campaign. The intern will directly report to the campaign press secretary. The intern will be responsible for monitoring and compiling press coverage, research and fact-checking, assisting the press secretary in drafting statements, web content, and press releases, utilizing social media, providing administrative support, preparing mailings and other tasks as assigned. The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in journalism, have excellent writing skills, and be capable of working in a high-stress, fast-paced environment. Previous internship or paid writing experience is preferred but not required. This internship is unpaid. Applicants who can intern until November will be given special consideration. The intern will work 35 hours per week.
