Internship opportunity at WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center

SOJ student assists NBC in New York with coverage of Summer 2012 Olympics

The 2012 Summer Olympics may be over, but for television journalism junior Mike Martin it was an experience he won’t soon forget.

Martin, a native of Long Island, N.Y., spent the summer as an intern at WNBC-TV, the flagship station of the NBC Television Network in New York City. As part of his duties, Martin helped with the station’s coverage of the Summer 2012 Olympics. Some of his responsibilities included monitoring multiple events, editing highlights, doing research and updating scores and times for news anchors.

The Daily Athenaeum awarded for excellence in advertising, news

The Daily Athenaeum, West Virginia University’s official student newspaper, was honored with 19 awards at the West Virginia Press Association’s annual banquet.

The newspaper won two awards for its coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden and the reaction it had on Morgantown and WVU students. The advertising, newsroom and production staffs combined for six sports-related awards.

WVU's PRT to alter schedule for start of fall semester

WVU’s PRT system will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Aug.13-14, for system scheduled maintenance prior to the start of the fall semester. For these two days, PRT passengers are encouraged to use the Mountain Line bus service. WVU employees and students have free access to Mountain Line with the use of a valid WVU ID. Mountain Line schedules can be viewed at http://www.busride.org/ or by calling 304-291-RIDE.

PRT service will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 15, with the full fall operating schedule of 6:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

WVU Career and Internship Fair Sept. 20

The WVU Career Fair is just around the corner—September 20th from 10 AM to 3 PM in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. The fair is open to students from all majors looking for full-time jobs or internships.

SOJ students uncover weight-loss stories

Four veterans of the School’s West Virginia Uncovered Program were recently featured in The Charleston Gazette. Their multimedia stories, which explore the issue of chronic disease and obesity in West Virginia, were included in The Gazette’s special series “The Shape We’re In.”

Working with DSLR video and documentary techniques, Shay Maunz, Brianna Swisher, Evan Moore and Mallory Bracken spent the spring 2012 semester investigating different aspects of the problem, which is estimated to cost the the U.S. Health Care Industry billions of dollars each year. As part of an independent study, with guidance from Program Director Mary Kay McFarland, student stories documented a range of subjects including one student’s journey to health, a state insurance program that helps people manage their weight, the role of family in healthy patterns and weight loss surgery.
