The SOJ held its annual December Graduate Open House on Sunday, December 9. Family, friends and SOJ faculty gathered in Martin Hall to acknowledge the graduating class and to recognize top graduating seniors and students graduating with Latin Honors. Candidates graduating in the School’s Master of Science in Journalism (MSJ) and Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications (MS-IMC) programs were also recognized. Undergraduate students earning the highest GPA in their major received special awards. Those students included Rebecca Rich (advertising), Chelsi Baker (journalism) and Stephanie Murphy (public relations). Baker and Murphy both earned an overall 4.0 GPA, making them both recipients of the SOJ’s Top Overall Scholar award for December 2012.
At the 17th annual Capital Classic Luncheon Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Charleston, WVU President Jim Clements introduced three Mountaineers who share a drive to better the lives of all and contribute to a better West Virginia.
One of those Mountaineers was SOJ alumna Elaine McMillion (BSJ, 2009), a documentary storyteller, who is currently completing graduate studies at Emerson College in Boston.
SOJ students should return any School equipment to Anan Wan during her hours this week. If students need to keep the equipment longer, they should notify Anan Wan and Mary Kay McFarland.
The GolinHarris Washington, D.C. office is looking for two, full-time, paid interns to assist corporate and public affairs client teams. The internship, which is 40 hours a week, is open to public relations graduates only. Applicants need to be able to commit at least four months to the program, which starts January 2013.
The intern will research and develop media lists, assist in event planning and execution, compile media audits and track legislation, among other duties.
Oceans Campus is looking for student journalists, both print and broadcast, interested in environmental journalism to intern in Africa and report on issues in the Garden Route region of the continent. Interns will travel to reserves, sanctuaries, cultural sites and game parks, among other places to research and write their stories.
