The West Virginia Press Association Foundation is accepting applications for 2013 Summer Internships and 2013-14 Scholarships. If awarded, the WVPAF provides both funded and unfunded internships at newspapers across West Virginia and scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.
The programs are open to journalism majors and students in related fields such as business management, human resources, advertising, social media and marketing. Preference will be given to students in at least their sophomore year of college.
The Times West Virginian, a seven-day, award-winning newspaper named West Virginia Press Association’s Newspaper of the Year for the past six consecutive years in Fairmont, W.Va., has an immediate opening for a full-time multimedia sports reporter.
The reporter will be responsible for covering youth, high school and some college sporting events, writing feature stories, as well as laying out daily sports pages. The candidate should have multimedia experience, including basic photography and videography, social media and be able to make simple updates to a website. The candidate should have a journalism background with a degree in journalism or a related field. Experience is preferred. Benefits include paid vacation, health and dental insurance and 401(k). The presenters will be Gary McCormick, APR, Fellow PRSA, and director of partnership development at HGTV; and Kevin Saghy, public relations and marketing specialist with the Chicago Cubs. They will be talking about what employers are really looking for, how to tailor a cover letter and resume to get past HR, and how to build a public persona online.
Students in West Virginia University’s School of Journalism are taking their talents beyond the classroom.
Four public relations students – Kelsey Bignell, Shanin Buchowski, Lindsey Doebler and Megan Higgins, have lent their know-how to the Wyoming County Economic Development Authority (EDA) in Southern West Virginia.
Kathy Killian, the Vice President of Human Resources for the Philadelphia Phillies and Jaclyn Vocell, the life coach on popular MTV’s hit show “MADE” will temporarily trade the video camera at MTV to speak to students at West Virginia University on Saturday, April 20, 2013 for the speaker series; “Advice from the Pros.” The event will focus on Women with Careers in Sports, Media and Entertainment. Jeanette Robertson from Underarmour and IFBB Bikini Pro Becky Clawson will join Ms. Kilian and Ms. Vocell as panelist for the event. The event is presented by the WVU Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, The Office of the President and the Office of Student Affairs. The event will take place on Saturday, April 20th in the Mountainlair Ballroom from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Attendance is free and the Morgantown community is invited. “The WVU Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is pleased to support this event that highlights the ever advancing inclusion of women in the sports and media industry. A new WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism major will provide students the professional skills needed in today’s integrated communications industry.
Set to launch in Fall 2013, new students interested in advertising and public relations will enroll in the School’s new Strategic Communications major. The program will teach students how to develop and produce persuasive messages and integrated communications campaigns that employ both public relations and advertising tactics.
Dr. Ivan Pinnell, an associate professor at West Virginia University’s P.I. Reed School of Journalism, has announced his retirement, effective Aug. 15.
Dr. Pinnell has been a central figure in the school’s public relations program for nearly 25 years. He chaired the program from 1989-2010. He also served as associate dean (1991-2007) and director of graduate studies (2001-2007).
