The West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism will offer a new online minor in strategic social media this fall, which will give WVU students a competitive edge in the marketplace after graduation.
The new minor will benefit students by teaching them how to use social media strategically to communicate to, engage with and influence a variety of audiences. As consumers continue to rely more on social media for news and information, companies have started to call on recent college graduates to tackle these communication challenges.
WVU students will earn the new online minor by successfully completing five three-hour courses, including three new online social media courses: social media strategy, social media applications and social media campaigns.
“The new online strategic social media minor is further evidence of the School of Journalism’s commitment to preparing students for careers of the future,” said Chad Mezera, director of online programs. “The new minor content will prepare students to be leaders in strategic social media communications and will be delivered online in a format students appreciate and value.”
WVU graduates with a minor in strategic social media will be in high demand by a wide range of organizations and businesses that need to communicate to and engage with their audiences via social media. A minor in strategic social media will prepare students to work in a variety of industries such as healthcare, government and non-profits, professional sports, entertainment and travel and tourism, among others.
In addition to the strategic social media minor, the School of Journalism offers online minors in public relations, advertising, health promotion and sport communication, which is offered in conjunction with the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences.
