Dow Jones News Fund 2014 Summer Internship applications now online

College juniors, seniors and graduate students are invited to apply to the Dow Jones News Fund for summer 2014 internships in digital, news and sports editing and business reporting. The application deadline is Nov. 1. More than 60 media companies hired 120 interns in 2013.

Interns will be trained at New York University, Arizona State University, the University of Missouri, Western Kentucky University, Temple University, Penn State University, the University of Nebraska and the University of Texas before reporting to work. News media are required to pay at least $350 per week for a minimum of 10 weeks.

The Fund covers travel costs to and from training then to newsrooms. Students who return to school after a successful internship will receive $1,000 college scholarships. Applicants must take a one-hour business reporting or editing exam in addition to submitting the application forms. Posters, brochures and tests have been mailed to professors on college campuses who have volunteered to serve as test monitors.

Students can find the monitors’ list, testimonials, videos and links to the application forms on the College Internships page at https://www.newsfund.org.

The results are still coming in but several 2013 interns scored extensions and even full-time jobs with their summer employers. Mark Sanchez of the University of Maryland was hired on the sports desk of the New York Post; Brooks Johnson from Montana is a page designer at the Idaho Falls Post Register; Andrea Ordonez of Hofstra continues to work at Newsday in New York and Mallorie Sullivan of Ohio University got an extension at the Virginian-Pilot.

Participating news organizations have included The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, WashingtonPost.com, Dow Jones Newswires, The Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, Thomson Reuters, Media General, The Journal News, Detroit News, The Tampa Bay Times, Indianapolis Star, the Minneapolis Star Tribune and many others.

The program is open to international students and U.S. students currently studying abroad. Students with questions can visit the website for details or email djnf@dowjones.com.
