Representatives from the West Virginia Legislature will visit the School on Monday, Oct. 21, and Tuesday, Oct. 22, to inform, promote, and help recruit students for the longstanding Spring 2014 WV Legislature Internship. Each year, students from both WVU and Marshall (approximately two from each) work closely with assigned delegates throughout the legislative session and write columns, newsletter articles, and other public relations pieces on behalf of their representatives. The students are truly immersed in the session and spend long (but rewarding) hours on the floor working with their delegates.
The paid internship (each Legislative Information intern will receive $1,300 per month—a total of $5,200) targets public relations students. We are especially targeting those students who have already taken or are currently enrolled in PR 324: Public Relations Writing and Applications. Students who have not yet taken the class will likely not possess the writing skills needed for the internship. Although the position would be of particular interest to students interested in public or governmental affairs or political communication, any dedicated public relations student would benefit from this experience. Students are required to spend the spring semester in Charleston, W.Va. They are responsible for their own living expenses; however, students may choose to live together in an apartment to cut down on costs. Charleston has several affordable housing opportunities, and the representatives can help with this aspect. They are in the process of sending more information regarding the stipend and application deadline.
Students may earn course credit, with prior written approval, for their internship. In the past, one of the primary concerns for students has been the fact that taking the internship would cause them to delay graduation because they would be away from campus for a semester. If the students are truly interested and this is the only reason for their apprehension, kindly send them to Oliver Street and/or Eric Minor. For all other questions, such as earning internship, independent study, or political science credits, please send them to Oliver Street.
Representatives will talk to several PR classes, and they will be available to talk to students at the following times:
Monday, Oct. 21
2:30 – 4:30 p.m.: Reps will be in room 101 Martin Hall to meet with interested students and those who were unable to hear them speak.
5 p.m.: Present to PRSSA (Room 205 Martin Hall)
Tuesday, Oct. 22
10:30 – 11: 30 a.m.: Reps will be in room 101 Martin Hall to meet with interested students and those who were unable to hear them speak.
