Elizabeth Kwolek, a 2012 MSJ graduate; SOJ assistant professor Hongmin Ahn and WVU Department of Communication Studies assistant professor Nick Bowman earned top honors in the National Communication Association’s 2013 Top Paper Panel. Their paper, “Generally concerned but not specifically: General and situational influences of vulnerable narcissism on social network privacy concerns,” earned the award in the association’s Human Communication and Technology Division.
The SOJ December Graduate Open House will begin with a short ceremony in 205 Martin Hall. In addition to acknowledging the graduating class, Dean Maryanne Reed will recognize top graduating seniors and students graduating with Latin Honors. Latin Honor cords will be presented at the event and should be worn during the WVU December Convocation ceremony. MSJ and MS-IMC graduates will also be recognized. Students receiving special honors will be notified individually prior to the event.

The Times West Virginian, the seven-time West Virginia Press Association Newspaper of the Year in Fairmont, W.Va., has an immediate opening for a full-time multi-media journalist. This person will be responsible for covering meetings, breaking news and general assignments. The candidate should have strong writing and photography skills, and be adept at posting through social media and simple updates to a website. Knowing how to shoot and edit video is a major plus. The candidate should have a journalism background with a degree in journalism or a related field. Experience is preferred. Benefits include paid vacation, health and dental insurance and 401(k). Students currently enrolled in an American college or university, either as an undergraduate or graduate, are encouraged to enter the win-a-trip contest held by The New York Times. The winner will travel with Times reporter Nicholas Kristof to the developing world, write for Kristof’s blog, On the Ground, and be featured in some of the videos produced on the trip. The contest was started in 2006 as a way to shed light on global poverty. For some of the winners, it has been life-changing, and HBO did a documentary called “Reporter” based on Kristof’s 2007 trip; it’s on Amazon if you want to see what you’re getting yourself in for.

The Walter J. Travis Society, Inc awards The Walter J. Travis Memorial Scholarship in recognition of the remarkable accomplishments and contributions of Walter J. Travis in the game of golf. In his pioneering career, he was a champion amateur golfer, esteemed golf course architect, innovative turf grass expert, and prolific golf journalist. Travis was founder and editor of one of the most influential golf magazines of his time, The American Golfer. The Travis Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a career in one of the following professions: landscape design/golf course architecture; golf course turf grass management/golf course superintendent; professional golf management, club professional, or sports journalism with a special interest in golf.
The News Presentation Department at The New York Times has multiple openings for staff editors on the copy desks and in digital production, based in New York. Ideal candidates for these jobs should have at least five years of experience editing news articles on deadline in a daily newsroom. All candidates must pass a Times editing test and a newsroom tryout. Candidates must be proficient in grammar and usage, understand the application of house style, have a strong grasp of current events, be able to identify material that may need to be checked for accuracy and know how to make the checks, and demonstrate creativity in the writing of headlines and other display type. You should know how to fix a troubled story with skill and diplomacy, with no damage to the writer’s voice. We expect a deep understanding of sound journalistic practice and ethics.
Applicants should have experience using publishing systems for all platforms, and candidates for digital production jobs should have technical proficiency beyond the basics. Experience editing multimedia, such as audio and video, and experience using social media for journalism is preferred.
