WVU journalism professor, students win top awards in international and regional competitions

A professor and several students at the West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism were recently recognized by international and regional award committees for their excellent work in the field of journalism.

The Broadcast Education Association awarded Teaching Assistant Professor Emily Hughes Corio first place in the faculty audio competition at this year’s Festival of Media Arts competition. She won the “Best of Festival” award for her radio piece, Fish Return to a Mining Country River, on the “comeback” of the highly polluted Cheat River in Northeastern West Virginia aired on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” last summer.

SOJ announces May Commencement keynote speaker

WVU is preparing to host a series of individual, personalized ceremonies for each school and college at a variety of venues on the Evansdale Campus and around Morgantown, including the WVU Coliseum, Creative Arts Center (CAC) and Morgantown Event Center from May 9-11. The WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism will hold its May Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 10, at 9:30 a.m. at the CAC. This year’s keynote speaker will be Amy Webb, digital media futurist and Founder of Webbmedia Group, a digital strategy agency that spots near-term emerging technology trends and develops innovative ideas and strategies for media organizations, Fortune 100 and 500 companies, large nonprofits, universities and government agencies. Recently, Amy’s team worked with American Express to re-imagine the future of credit cards on mobile phones and Time Inc to develop content strategies for screenless computing. In addition, Amy is the Co-Founder ofSpark Camp, a next-generation think tank that brings together bright minds to imagine the future and to solve problems in society.

Amy holds many professional affiliations and collaborates with a number of institutions. She is a Delegate on the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, a Lecturer in the Sulzberger Leadership Program at Columbia University, a member of the Aspen Institute Dialogue on Libraries, and a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Interactive Media Peer Group – Emmy award judge). She is on the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and and serves on several startup and advisory boards, including the SXSW Accelerator, Temple University’s School of Media and Communication and the International Center for Journalists.
Amy originally attended the Jacobs School of Music to study classical clarinet and has an M.S. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She also earned Nikyu Certification in the Japanese government-administered Language Proficiency Test and speaks fluently.

Google head of media solutions–tech to deliver keynote address at IMC conference

Nix, Google’s Head of Media Solutions–Tech, will discuss the marketing strategies that span mobile, video, display, search and social platforms on Saturday evening, May 31, during the conference keynote dinner at the Milan Puskar Stadium’s Touchdown Terrace.

Nix began his career at Google in 2009 and helped grow Google Mobile into a billion dollar business that is now the largest mobile search, display and video network in the world. He has more than 10 years in media and advertising experience at NBC, OMD and Google and has worked on blue chip clients like Bank of America and PlayStation.

Graduate Assistant – Public Relations, Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources Edit article

The graduate assistant-public relations position is open to full-time on-campus graduate students in English, journalism, or a related field. It is a 20-hour-per-week graduate assistantship.

Qualifications: 
Enrolled in a master’s degree program in a relevant field. Good writer, good work ethic, good organizational and communication skills.

Donate School Supplies and Meet the WVU Men's Basketball Team: PR Students Host a Supply Drive to Benefit Local Nonprofit

A team of students, known as the ELF Enhancement Fund, has kicked off a community-wide “Stuff the Bus” Supply Drive as a part of their public relations capstone. The students are working with the Morgantown Early Learning Facility (ELF), a local parent-owned, nonprofit educational program for children ages 2-12.

The drop-off for the Stuff the Bus Supply Drive will take place on Saturday, April 26 from 1-3 p.m. in the Hall of Traditions at the WVU Basketball Practice Facility. The WVU Men’s Basketball team will be on hand to accept supplies, pose for photos and sign autographs. The first 50 people who donate at least three supplies will receive a poster that is autographed by the WVU Men’s Basketball team.

Mon County Habitat for Humanity seeks Web Design and Social Media Developer intern

The Web Design and Social Media Developer will redesign organization’s website to ensure it is clean, modern, and user friendly. Update and develop website content including blogging, creating multimedia content, and professional images. Create, develop and manage social media content focused on Habitat brand. Monitor social media channels to find relevant conversations. Create and update outreach and marketing materials. This position is unpaid unless candidate qualifies for a full-time summer work-study position.

Qualifications:
Candidate must be experienced with website design. Proficient using Wordpress with understanding of HTML desired. Strong knowledge of social media strategies, services, and tools (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, blogs, website). Experience creating multimedia packages including writing, photo, video, and audio. Excellent communication and writing skills is a must. Experience creating outreach and marketing materials (newsletters, brochures) preferred. Must have access to all needed editing software and equipment (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, video editing software, camera or phone that takes quality video/photos, etc).

Top students, faculty recognized at Spring Honors Ceremony

The P.I. Reed School of Journalism is proud to announce its highest-achieving students for this year. The Dean and SOJ faculty honored Kappa Tau Alpha inductees, outstanding seniors, and those graduating with Latin Honors at a ceremony on April 4 in the Mountainlair Ballrooms.

The following students were inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha national journalism honor society: Lindsey Beall, Rachel Duryea, Christen Eaton, Kelsey Montgomery, Ian Moore, Danielle O’Neill, Andrea Oliver, Timothy Saar, Daryn Vucelik, Angelee Wiley and Erin Zipf​.

WVU students required to have health insurance as of Fall 2014

The University will be requiring students to have health insurance coverage beginning in the Fall 2014 semester. All students at WVU and WVU Tech enrolled in six or more credit hours will be required to provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage or enroll in WVU’s Aetna student health insurance plan. Students who are already covered under a parent’s or spouse’s health insurance policy – or who have adequate health insurance coverage via another plan, including plans purchased through WV PEIA or the WV Insurance Exchange – may waive the student health insurance plan by completing an online waiver form. PR Capstone students partner with PACE Enterprises and Monongalia County high schools to raise awareness

Eight students in Dr. Rita Colistra’s capstone course are partnering with PACE Enterprises and Monongalia County high schools to increase awareness of the services that PACE provides to adults with disabilities.

PACE is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing employment for people with disabilities. One group that PACE focuses on is recent high school graduates. The goal of the partnership is to increase special education teachers’ awareness of the employment opportunities available to graduates with disabilities.
