WJLA TV seeks full-time photographers

WJLA-TV/NewsChannel 8 has five job openings for our News Photographer position.

You should have two years of ENG experience with a network affiliate news organization. You will cover day to day general, in-depth, features and investigative assignments. We are shooting full HD on media cards and editing on desktops and laptops. You should have strong editing skills in non-linear edit systems, have and maintain a valid license and a good driving record, possess excellent people skills, a strong work ethics and have a great attitude. A passion for story telling is absolutely essential in this position.

The desired candidates must also be able to:

-Edit field tape at bureaus, in microwave and satellite trucks, and at NEWS CHANNEL 8.
-Set up, staff, and troubleshoot live shots at bureaus, microwave and satellite trucks, and fiber locations at the Verizon Center and FedEx Field.
-Perform as microwave truck operator as needed.
-Monitor edit system components to ensure tape quality in end-product, including work space area.
-Play back tapes during live newscasts.
-Update and maintain tape library.
-Enter edit sheets into computer tape library system.
-Provide feedback to reporters and producers on video direction.
-Contribute story ideas.
-Keep editing equipment and bays well maintained.

Required Skills:

We are looking for aggressive team-players who can produce good stories under tight deadlines.
Must have valid driver’s license and be able to operate ENG news vehicles, have at least one year shooting experience, and technical knowledge of editing and photo equipment.

Responsibilities will involve editing, shooting general assignment stories, lives shots and natural sound packages. Must be able to lift and carry between 25 and 50 pounds on a regular basis.

College degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or equivalent. Relevant work experience may be substituted for education requirements. Applicants must have at least 3 years experience with broadcast quality video cameras. News videography experience highly preferred. This is not an entry-level position. Minimum 1 year experience editing ENG tapes, preferably beta 1/2-inch format. Knowledge of metro Washington, DC, geographic area an asset. Able to maneuver heavy equipment successfully in the field, particularly on sites with difficult accessibility. Possession of a valid driver’s license and able to operate company vehicles in a safe manner. Able to attend work regularly. Available to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays.
