College of Media professors receive awards from top industry professionals

Two West Virginia University Reed College of Media professors have received praise from their peers at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC)Associate Professor Joel Beeson and Visiting Assistant Professor Julia Fraustino each received awards earlier this month at the 2015 AEJMC conference in San Francisco, California.

The “Best of the Web/Best of Digital” competition is an annual Web and app design contest for AEJMC members. There are four categories to accommodate submissions from individuals and small groups to department- and institution-wide projects. Judging is done by Web and app design professionals and academics with a background in Web and app design and technology.

IMPAKT Creative Marketing and Branding interviewing for Fall 2015 interns

IMPAKT Creative Marketing and Branding, a rapidly-growing Morgantown-based agency will be interviewing for Fall 2015 interns.

Creative Director Luke Nesler will be in Room 101 of Martin Hall on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until Noon to interview candidates for the positions of Web Design Intern and Social Media/Copywriter Intern.

New South Media interviewing for Fall 2015 interns

New South Media, the Morgantown-based publisher of Morgantown Magazine, West Virginia Focus Magazine, WV Living Magazine and WV Weddings Magazine will be interviewing for Fall 2015 interns.

Managing Editor Katie Griffith will be in Room 101 of Martin Hall on Thursday, August 27th from 8:00 a.m. until Noon to interview candidates for the positions of Social Media/Web Writer and Print Editorial Intern.

Mountaineer TV informational session-Aug. 24!

If you are interested in a career in sports broadcasting, you have an immediate opportunity to work with Mountaineer TV, the WVU Athletic Department’s video production team. Mountaineer TV produces live coverage of WVU sports. This includes live game-day production for the video board as well as live streaming for a global audience on the Web.

These are paid positions with flexible hours.

Fall 2015 equipment check-out/check-in hours for Martin Hall

Equipment for classes at the WVU Reed College of Media can be checked out/in across the hall from Room G2. The hours are as follows:

Monday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 4:00 pm – 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Friday: 12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Journalism alumna and team win national college film competition

Victoria Licata (BSJ, 2014) has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. In spring 2014 she co-anchored WVU News special edition episode, All Things Social Media, which won a first-place national Emmy Award for Outstanding College Newscast. But lately, Licata has found herself taking on a different role—actress and film promoter.

Last month, her film, Au Milieu, won the Fan Choice Award in the national Campus Movie Fest competition. The film competed against 19 other distinguished student films from around the country to win the $10,000 grand prize.

Painkiller epidemic panel discussion to highlight launch of WVU journalism professor's new book

When West Virginia University Associate Professor John Temple read an article about the country’s deadliest pill mill, he was fascinated by the story and wanted to uncover more.

The result is his third book, “American Pain: How a Young Felon and His Ring of Doctors Unleashed America’s Deadliest Drug Epidemic.” The book is the true story of twin brothers Chris and Jeff George, who ran an illegal painkiller distribution scheme through a Florida-based chain of pain clinics. The clinic’s physicians distributed massive quantities of oxycodone to addicts posing as patients—giving rise to a new drug industry that tipped the current opioid crisis.
