Award-winning journalist Liliana Segura to speak March 3

Liliana SeguraAward-winning journalist Liliana Segura will speak on the failures and successes of the U.S. criminal justice system.

Time: 4:30-6:00 p.m.

There will be free pizza provided on a first-come, first-served basis between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. Segura’s talk will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The event is co-sponsored by the WVU Reed College of Media, WVU Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and WVU Society of Profesional Journalists (SPJ).

Liliana Segura a former associate editor of The Nation magazine and currently serves as a senior writer and editor at The Intercept, the news website launched in 2014 by Glenn Greenwald, who broke the story about documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. She covers a range of issues related to prisons and prisoners, writing investigative features as well as commentary on wrongful convictions, the harsh sentencing of juvenile defendants and the death penalty.

Her work has been featured in The Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, DemocracyNow! and several other news outlets. In 2015, she was awarded the Silver Gavel Award by the State Bar of Texas. Previously, she won a Media for a Just Society Award. Segura serves on the board of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, as well as Race Forward, a racial justice think tank. She recently moved from New York to Nashville.
