Deadline to apply and RSVP for May Commencement is March 4

Do you plan to participate in the May 2016 Commencement ceremony? The deadline to apply for graduation and RSVP for the ceremony (two separate things) is March 4. 
For more information on the ceremony, how to apply for graduation, how to order your cap and gown and just about anything else you need to know, go to the Commencement page on the College’s website.

College of Media broadens VR storytelling efforts with new Innovators-in-Residence


This spring, the West Virginia University College of Media will continue to push the boundaries of storytelling with the help of two new media innovators.

Phoebe Connelly, executive producer of video at The Washington Post, and Danese Kenon, assistant managing editor of visuals at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, will partner with College of Media students and faculty to test new ways of telling immersive video and visual stories in 360.

WVU journalism professor to brief Congress on WWI black experience and parallels to current racial tensions in America

When black soldiers returned home from World War I, many of them went to battle on a different front, becoming the foot soldiers of the modern civil rights movement.

West Virginia University Reed College of Media associate professor Joel Beeson has spent the past decade researching the black experience in WWI. Now he will take his expertise to Washington, D.C., and speak to Congress about that time period in our Nation’s history and its similarities to the current racial climate in America.

Professor Beeson wins international award for his ground-breaking work in AR/VR storytelling

West Virginia University Reed College of Media Professor Joel Beeson is receiving international recognition for his work in augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) storytelling.

His ground-breaking reporting project, Fractured Tour: An Immersive VR Tour of Selma’s Divides, was singled out of 1,500 entries to win the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) “Best of Festival” award. Only 18 winners received this prestigious honor at the BEA Festival of Media Arts.

America's Opiate Epidemic: The next topic for the David C. Hardesty Jr. Festival of Ideas

Journalist and author Sam Quinones will be featured along with Associate Professor and American Pain author John Temple for a discussion on America’s Opiate Epidemic.

The next David C. Hardesty Jr. Festival of Ideas will be held on March 1, 2016 at 7:30pm in the Fukushima Auditorium at the Health Sciences Center.

WVU's new Media Innovation Center offers unique opportunities for students

The center, which is an expansion of the WVU Reed College of Media, officially opened to the public on January 29 with an open house celebration.

Students and faculty showcased projects involving virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR), sensor journalism, community branding, 3D modeling, digital storytelling and even computer brain interface. President E. Gordon Gee was on hand to experiment with the center’s technology and take 360° selfies with students. WVU Reed College of Media Dean Maryanne Reed and MIC Creative Director Dana Coester welcomed the packed house and thanked those who supported the project, which was nearly three years in the making.

Strategic communications senior Charity Junkins selected for prestigious AAF Chicago Portfolio School

Strategic communications senior and WVU American Advertising Federation (AAF) Ad Club secretary Charity Junkins can now count herself among an elite group of advertising students nationwide. Junkins is one of twenty-five AAF members in the entire country selected to participate in the Chicago Portfolio School (CPS) webinar.

The CPS webinar, which is co-sponsored by AAF, is completely online and is a year’s worth of portfolio school condensed into two to three months. Topics include the hiring process for firms and agencies, the difference between concept and execution and understanding the importance of keeping them separate, and how to land the ideal internship.
