Margie Mason

Commencement will be extra special this year as the College of Media welcomes home alumna and Pulitzer Prize winner Margie Mason (BSJ, 1997). She will deliver the keynote address on May 12 at 9 a.m. at the WVU Coliseum. Mason, a native of Daybrook, West Virginia, and her Associated Press colleagues won the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service in 2016 for their investigative project, “Seafood from Slaves.” Read more about Mason and see a complete list of WVU's Commencement speakers. College of Media faculty and students honored

Rita Colistra and Geah Pressgrove

Two College of Media strategic communications faculty have received University awards for their outstanding contributions. Assistant Professor Geah Pressgrove is the recipient of the 2017 Heebink Award for Distinguished Service in the early career category. Associate Professor Rita Colistra received the James and Karen Caveney Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award. In addition, strategic communications senior Jacob Byrne made the list of WVU Outstanding Seniors. Byrne and other students were recognized last week at the College’s annual Spring Honors Ceremony. Teaching Assistant Professor Elizabeth Oppe received the College’s Golden Quill Teaching Award and Assistant Professor Julia Daisy Fraustino was presented with the Faculty Research Award. Also recognized were the College’s top overall scholars, outstanding seniors, Latin Honors recipients and KTA inductees.

College awarded Benedum grant to serve growing interest in rural issues

100 Days meeting

The West Virginia University Reed College of Media recently received a grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation that will help students gain valuable media skills while sharing the stories of Appalachia. The funding will support the development of a new media enterprise that builds on the success of “100 Days in Appalachia,” which was launched in January 2017. The project narrates President Trump’s first 100 Days in office from a unique Appalachian point of view and shows how policy decisions may impact Appalachian communities. Social justice project explores inequities in food access in rural and urban areas

As part of a Knight-funded Innovator-in-Residence program, journalism students at West Virginia University Reed College of Media and Morgan State University School of Global Journalism and Communication partnered to investigate the inequities in food access in both urban Baltimore and rural West Virginia. During the semester-long project, students immersed themselves in both cultures to receive hands-on training in social justice reporting. Media professionals involved with the project will conduct a free public workshop on April 28. Read more about the initiative.

Dr. Pinnell honored at Potomac State College ceremony

WVU Potomac State College is recognizing Professor Emeritus R. Ivan Pinnell for his scholarly achievements. The alumni association recently added his name to a special Scholars’ Wall at the College near Keyser, West Virginia. Pinnell earned his associate degree in journalism from Potomac state in 1963 before continuing his education at WVU. Pinnell served as a faculty member at the P.I. Reed School of Journalism/WVU Reed College of Media for nearly 25 years. Read more about the award and Pinnell’s achievements online.
