New SOJ advising procedures and schedule announced

ATTENTION ALL SOJ STUDENTS:

It’s almost time to pre-register for Summer and Fall 2010 courses!

Please note that the process for registering for classes has changed significantly. Below is a detailed explanation of the new procedure. Read this information carefully prior to your advising appointment. Download this information as a printable PDF!

Q: When do I register for classes?

A: Below are the pre-registration dates. Remember, you need to meet with your advisor ONE WEEK prior to your pre-registration date.

Grads/Honors/Athletes —- Tuesday, March 16 at 7 am
Seniors (89+ hrs.) —- Tuesday, March 23 at 7 am
Juniors (59 – 88 hrs.) —- Tuesday, April 6 at 7 am
Sophomores (29 – 58 hrs.) —- Tuesday, April 13 at 7 am
Freshmen (0 – 28 hrs.) —- Tuesday, April 20 at 7 am
Q: Who is my advisor?

A: If you don’t know who your advisor is, Ronda Maxon in 107 Martin can provide this information.

Q: How do I obtain my PIN?

A: Beginning Spring 2010, you will no longer use a PIN to register for classes. This is a University-wide transition.

Instead, you will be able to register (provided that you do not have holds on your account) once the SOJ Advising Center receives paperwork verifying that you have seen an advisor.

Q: What’s the new advising procedure?

1. Meet with your faculty advisor.

2. Obtain a signed STAR form and advising evaluation form.

3. Bring BOTH forms to the Advising Center (108 Martin) AS SOON AS YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR ADVISING SESSION.
—Deposit the evaluation form in the marked box.
—Deposit ONLY the yellow copy of the STAR form in the other marked box. Keep the white copy for your records.

4. The Advising Center will remove the PIN from your student account, which will enable you to register for classes.
—Paperwork must be received by 4 p.m. Mondays to enable timely registration on Tuesdays.

Q: The class that I need to graduate is full!

A: If it’s a non-journalism class, you will need to see the Advising Center in that department. If it’s an SOJ course, then you will need to visit Jan Boyles in person. The Office of the Registrar will no longer accept signed STAR forms for these classes. Jan’s office hours are posted outside 108 Martin.
