Apply now for SOJ Scholarships--Deadline March 30!

The P.I. Reed School of Journalism invites all SOJ students to apply for scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. This is an especially exciting time in the life of the School of Journalism as a number of new scholarships have recently been created.

Interested students must complete the SOJ Scholarship Application by 4 p.m. on March 30, 2012. Completed applications will be reviewed by the SOJ Scholarship Selection Committee. As financial need is a determinant in scholarship selection, students must also submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1.

Interdisciplinary minor creates unique opportunities for WVU students

In the era of digital and mobile media, traditional news organizations are struggling for their share of the marketplace. Increasingly, journalism graduates are being called upon to contribute new ideas and help develop new economic models to strengthen and reinvent media.

Recognizing the need for students to be innovative and entrepreneurial, West Virginia University’s P.I. Reed School of Journalism and College of Business and Economics will launch a new blended minor in Media Entrepreneurship in Fall 2012.

Journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon tonight at Festival of Ideas, 7:30pm, Erickson Alumni Center!

Bestselling author of The Dressmaker of Khair Khana. She is a major new voice on the role of female entrepreneurs in the developing world. Her book is a crystallization of her view that women are the unsung heroes of war-torn regions and emerging markets alike.

Lemmon is a contributing editor-at-large for Newsweek Magazine and The Daily Beast, reporting on economic and development issues with a focus on women. She is also the deputy director of the Council on Foreign Relations Women and Foreign Policy program.

Students can win awards of up to $2,000 for writing a news feature piece

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS: 
Full-time college students who are sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in journalism, English writing or communications, or those with related majors or skills. All entrants must be Western Pennsylvania residents or attend a Western Pennsylvania college. Both male and female students can enter.

Appalachian Coal Country Team seeks Paid Summer Intern

The Appalachian Coal Country Team (ACCT) is seeking a Summer Program Member to begin in June, 2012. The Environmental Steward Summer Program, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and the Department of the Interior’s Office of Youth, Partnerships & Service, are providing opportunities for 10 week summer service positions.

These positions are intended to create environmental stewardship opportunities and provide professional development and hands-on experience for the Summer Program Members. The ACCT, a nonprofit that works in 7 states, is looking is looking for a PR/Marketing intern with strong writing skills to conduct for the Team.

Paid Summer Internship Opportunities at the Dominion Post

Representatives from the Dominion Post will be conducting interviews in Martin Hall to select two summer interns to work side-by-side with experienced reporters, photographers and editors. Journalism students looking for an opportunity to learn on-the-job should apply.

Interns should expect to hit the ground running and write hard-news, features and sports articles during the 12-week internship.
The internships are paid. Students typically make $10 an hour and work up to 29 hours a week.

SOJ to host panel on social media and the Middle East

As revolt swept the Middle East in the spring of 2011, governments fell. Bloggers and tweeters had chipped away at regimes, detailing every time they saw the emperor without clothes. As the discontent swelled and rose, the messages didn’t stop when countries blacked out the Internet and the people started making government change, whether it wanted to or not.

The West Virginia University Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism’s Ogden Newspapers Seminar Series is bringing witnesses of the online revolution to campus to discuss the role of social media in spreading democracy movements in the Middle East and across the world.

Transitions Online summer training and workshop opportunities

Transitions Online (TOL) is offering three courses in spring/summer 2012, covering international reporting, photojournalism and digital journalism. The courses will bring together students from around the world, and have a strong emphasis on “hands-on” training (including practical reporting assignments – a great way for the students to gain real-world reporting experience).

TOL is a nonprofit organization established to strengthen the professionalism, independence and impact of the news media in the post-communist countries of Europe and the former Soviet Union. TOL does this through a combination of journalism and media training programs, and the publication of Transitions Online magazine.
