WVU Reed College of Media hackathon empowers young women in technology

Transformative. Life-changing. Eye-opening. These words describe the experience of young women who participated in a women-and-wearables hackathon this weekend at the West Virginia University Reed College of Media.

Forty-two women from WVU and universities across the country came together to develop innovative concepts for wearable technology and to learn how to overcome barriers in the growing media technology industry.

College of Media to co-host women's hackathon, symposium with PBS MediaShift

“This is one of the most important issues affecting women leaders in tech and media right now,” said Maryanne Reed, dean of the College of Media. “We want to spark a national conversation about the barriers facing women in technology, and we want to inspire young women to push beyond those boundaries by connecting them to women leaders in Silicon Valley.”

“Hack the Gender Gap: A Women’s Hackathon on Wearables” will bring college-age women from around the country to WVU to “hack” solutions for wearable technology and to learn about opportunities in this emerging marketplace, while being mentored by prominent female leaders in the industry.

Innovation Lab Walk-up stations

The four computers at the walk-up stations are ready to use. Each computer has all the software you will likely need for class projects (Adobe Master Suite, iWorks suite, and Office suite), and they can be used to check email or to send items to the printer. We hope these new computers will be very useful for you.
