The late Dr. George Esper was world renowned for reporting on some of the biggest news stories in history, but by his own admission, one of his greatest achievements was mentoring young journalists.
Now Esper’s legacy as a foreign correspondent will live on at the WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism thanks to the generosity of another distinguished WVU alumnus, Joe Steranka. Steranka, CEO of The Professional Golfers’ Association of America and a 1979 graduate of the School of Journalism, endowed the George Esper International Student Enhancement Fund in June. The Fund will support students participating in study-abroad or faculty-led international trips.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting seeks two (2) full-time Reporters for its Charleston newsroom.
Qualifications: The successful candidates must have excellent reporting, interviewing, writing and electronic news gathering skills to produce substantive radio/television stories for a statewide and regional audience. The candidates also must be able to maintain high journalistic standards of fairness under deadline pressure and must work collaboratively with others in a multimedia newsroom. Two years’ reporting experience required. Previous experience with posting to the web and using social media is highly desirable. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or an appropriate combination of education and experience. These positions require working irregular hours, extended days, weekends and holidays.

Award-winning journalist Alison Bass has joined the West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism as an assistant professor of journalism. Bass, who is the author of a critically acclaimed book about the pharmaceutical industry, will teach reporting and writing courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs this fall.
Bass’s book, Side Effects: A Prosecutor, a Whistleblower and a Bestselling Antidepressant on Trial, won the National Association of Science Writers’ Science in Society Award in 2009. In 2007, she was awarded an Alicia Patterson Fellowship to research Side Effects. The book tells the true story of two women who exposed the deception behind the making of a best-selling drug. Bass currently blogs about public health and healthcare issues at www.alison-bass.com and is working on her next book.

Award-winning documentary storyteller and SOJ alumna Elaine McMillion (BSJ, 2009) visited Morgantown this month to share her experience with community-driven media and interactive documentaries. McMillion is the creator of “Hollow”, an interactive documentary on rural life in McDowell County, W.Va. McMillion believes West Virginia often has a negative reputation, especially the rural southern areas, so her goal is to redefine this perspective.
McMillion and another guest documentary filmmaker, Jigar Mehta, discussed how interactive documentaries are more than just films—they are living histories. Since 1977, the National Journalism Center, a project of Young America’s Foundation, has provided aspiring conservative and libertarian journalists with the premier opportunity to learn the principles and practice of responsible reporting. The National Journalism Center combines 12 weeks of on-the-job training at a Washington, D.C.-based media outlet with once-weekly training seminars led by prominent journalists, policy experts, and NJC faculty.
The program matches interns with print, broadcast, or online media outlets based on their interests and experience. Interns spend 30 hours/week gaining practical, hands-on journalism experience. Potential placements include The Washington Times, The Washington Examiner, CNN, Fox News Channel, and more.
