School of Journalism establishes four new student scholarships

West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism alumnus Ray Gillette (BSJ, 1971) and his wife Susan were the first in their family to go to college. The experience changed their lives and motivated them to help future generations.

“We realize that our parents worked hard to help put us through school,” said Gillette. “Today it is even harder to send a child to college. This is especially true for minority students. My wife and I have been successful in life, and we feel fortunate to be able to give this scholarship.”

JQE test dates

The Journalism Qualifying Exam (JQE) will be held on Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29, 2011 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in room 101 of Clark Hall.

The testing fee is $20 and will be charged to your student account after the test. Please bring a photo ID and a #2 pencil with you.

W. E. B. Du Bois Fellowships

Dr. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1896, and provides a standard of excellence for scholarship in any discipline and an especially inspiring model for black scholars. Because of the achievements of Dr. Du Bois, West Virginia University has named this fellowship program in his honor. These fellowships are open to African American graduate and professional students, excluding those in the Health Sciences, who are native or naturalized U.S. citizens . The stipend amount for this fellowship is $18,000 for nine months, and requires some service obligation. Selection is competitive on the basis of academic merit and potential for success in graduate or professional study. Inquiries should be directed to the graduate or professional program of choice or to the Office of Graduate Education & Life.

Opportunity for student entrepreneurs

The Business Plan Competition, now in its sixth year, is hosted statewide by the West Virginia University Entrepreneurship Center in WVU’s College of Business and Economics. Prizes are awarded to the top entrepreneur in each of two categories: “Lifestyle & Innovation” and “Hospitality & Tourism.” Winning teams are required to start their businesses in West Virginia.

Students who enter the competition must submit a three- to five-page summary of their business idea no later than noon on Sept. 27. The Business Plan Competition is open to any fulltime college student attending a four-year, degree-granting West Virginia institution. Up to 10 semi-finalist teams in each category will be selected and announced in mid-October.

The Missouri School of Journalism seeks papers for Young Scholars Conference

The Missouri School of Journalism seeks papers for a Young Scholars Conference , to be held Feb. 9-11, 2012, in Columbia, Mo. The conference theme is “War and the Press,” and scholars from all disciplines are welcome. Young scholars are defined as doctoral and graduate students, as well as professors in the first four years of their careers.
Papers may be single or jointly authored. Those interested should submit a five-page abstract outlining the proposed paper’s background and rationale (with supporting literature), research questions and hypotheses, method, and appropriate bibliography by Nov. 1, 2011, to cepnr9@mail.missouri.edu. Include “War and the Press Submission” in the email subject line.
Those selected to present at the conference will be notified by December 1, 2011. Final conference-ready papers will be due Feb. 9, 2012. A partial travel stipend will be awarded to the authors of accepted papers. The conference is co-sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Reynolds Journalism Institute, and The Journal of Mass Media Ethics.
