Opportunity Alert for the week of September 28th

The National Association of Black Journalists offers a summer internship with NBC Universal in New York. While they have not yet posted applications for Summer 2016, now is the time to start preparing your application. Fellows in this program will be assigned to work for 10 weeks (at $10/hour) with one of NBC News’s programs. You must be a current member of NABJ, be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student and must be able to relocate to New York for the full summer program. You’ll need to submit a resume, cover letter, school transcript, and five work samples. · Your Community Foundation (based in Morgantown) has immediate need for a PAID writing/social media/marketing intern. Pays $10.50-$16.50/hour (commensurate with experience). 20 hours per week. Preference given to students who can make a two-semester commitment. Duties include helping market YCF’s “Opportunity Day” to businesses of varying sizes throughout North Central WV. Advising blog offers guidance to students preparing for registration

The relationship you have with your College advisor is probably much different than the one you experienced with your high school advisor. With college comes the freedom to choose your classes, but with so much freedom, some guidance is necessary to keep you on track for graduation.

"Need to Read" Flash Mob Oct. 7

Have you always wanted to participate in a flash mob? Well, now you can! The Literacy Volunteers of Monongalia and Preston Counties (LVMPC) is hosting the “Need to Read” Flash Mob Read-In event October 7 at 2 p.m. in Woodburn Circle.

Participants are asked to bring something to read to show support for the battle against illiteracy in West Virginia. Check in to receive a free raffle ticket and proof of attendance to qualify for LVMPC iServe volunteer hours.

Apply for December Graduation! Deadline Oct. 2!

If you anticipate graduating in December 2015, you must complete the online graduation application by October 2, 2015. Students who have previously applied for graduation, but whose degree was not granted must resubmit a graduation application. If you will not complete all degree requirements by December, please do not submit a graduation application at this time. Only students who will complete all requirements by the end of the fall semester will be eligible for December graduation.

Fall Family Weekend October 2-4


Families of West Virginia University students will be welcomed to campus for the annual Fall Family Weekend sponsored by the Mountaineer Parents Club Oct. 2-4, 2015 with a host of new events, plenty of pancakes and even an opportunity for a selfie or two with President Gordon Gee.

Events have been scheduled for families eager to explore the greater Morgantown community. On Friday, the annual ‘Art is Food’ event, a collaborative effort between the Mountaineer Parents Club and Main Street Morgantown, will be located at the corner of Fayette and Spruce streets from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and includes samplings of food from Morgantown eateries provided through the Downtown Morgantown Restaurant Association. 2016 Pulliam Fellowship now accepting applications

The 2016 Pulliam Fellowship welcomes application’s for next year’s program. Twenty winners nationwide will be chosen for a 10-week internship, which will run from June 6 through August 12,2016 in Indianapolis and Phoenix.

For 42 years, the Pulliam Fellowship has awarded internships to promising journalists committed to news reporting. More than 600 Fellows have completed the program. many are still working in news. Four have won the Pulitzer Prize.

Journalism professor to debut book about sex work and the law


The Huffington Post recently interviewed  West Virginia University Reed College of Media  Assistant Professor Alison Bass about sex work and the law, as her upcoming book focuses on this issue. getting screwed book cover

Getting Screwed: Sex Workers and the Law, publicly debuts in early October. The book weaves the true stories of sex workers together with the history of prostitution and the latest research into what one author calls “a gripping, clear-eyed look at a marginalized subculture.” Bass makes the argument that decriminalizing prostitution would alleviate many of the problems associated with commercial sex.
