Former SOJ Dean hired as Poynter Institute's new Foundation President

The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a nationally prominent center for journalism training and an international media studies think tank, has named Chris Martin as president of the newly formed Poynter Foundation.

Martin, currently West Virginia University’s vice president for University Relations, will be responsible for significantly increasing philanthropic support for the 37-year-old Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. Additionally, she will serve as Poynter’s vice president for external relations as a member of the Institute’s senior management team. Martin served as the WVU School of Journalism’s Dean from 1997-2003.

PR firm seeks intern to telecommute

Homestead Communications in Charleston, W.Va. has an opening for a telecommuting PR intern. Intern must have strong writing and design skills, including familiarity with InDesign, Contribute, Word and Microsoft Access.

ProPublica seeks intern with excellent reporting and social media skills

ProPublica is seeking an intern to both report and help build community around its investigative projects with social media and engagement tools.

The internship will begin in January and last for up to a year. It is full-time and based in New York. Compensation is $700 per week.

KDKA to interview interns on Nov. 26

KDKA-TV/WPCW-TV will be conducting internship interviews for the 2013 Winter/Spring semester (January through May) on Monday, Nov. 26. The interviews will be held that day only at KDKA-TV located at 420 Fort Duquesne Blvd in Suite 100, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the welcome and introduction begin at 10 a.m. After that, candidates are interviewed in the order in which they sign up. Candidates are to bring their paperwork with them to the interviews. Previous interns are not permitted to do a second internship.

SOJ and WVU receive top marketing communications awards

The School of Journalism and WVU’s University Relation’s Division won a total of nine awards in the international MarCom Awards, which recognize outstanding creative achievement in the marketing and communications fields.

The winners were chosen from more than 6,000 entries from corporate and educational marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers throughout the United States, Canada and several other countries. The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals bestows the awards annually.

Magazine internships available in New York and D.C.

The American Society of Magazine Editors is sponsoring a 10-week summer internship program for rising college seniors at magazines in New York and Washington. 
The magazines and websites included in the program are

Interns will report, edit, fact-check and copy-edit for print and online publications. The program includes a three-day orientation program. ASME interns will also attend special events in New York and Washington and meet with top editors.

WVU journalism students offer state publications alternative news source

Through the new Mountaineer News Service, senior journalism students are producing multi-platform news and feature packages, which are offered monthly to members of the West Virginia Press Association as free content. The packages are aimed at engaging younger audiences as well as enhancing the paper’s online presence.

“This program offers incredible benefits and value to newspapers of the West Virginia Press Association,” said WVPA Executive Director Don Smith. “It gives West Virginia newspapers additional multi-platform offerings at a time when more and more of our readers/viewers want their news online or on their mobile device.”
