Paid fall journalism internships

The Institute for Human Studies at George Mason University is offering paid journalism internships this fall. Through the program, aspiring journalists can intern at four types of media organizations:

All internships include instruction in core reporting skills: identifying compelling stories, finding reputable and objective sources, and asking the right questions. Plus all interns meet and network at the week long IHS journalism career workshop during the summer.

Partnership between alumni and SOJ provides students with hands-on experience

When West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism alumnus Mike Fulton graduated in 1979, it was a fellow alumnus who helped him launch a successful career on Capitol Hill.

In keeping with the “Mountaineer Spirit” of giving back to his alma mater, Fulton, now executive vice president for the Washington, D.C., public affairs firm GolinHarris, helped to establish the Mountaineer in D.C. internship program with his company in 2004. Each year, he works closely with the School of Journalism’s advising staff to select students for the high-profile internship.

The Dominion Post seeks part-time student writer

The Dominion Post is looking for an experienced part-time student writer to produce five stories a week during the football season for the GoalPost special section. The paper is also looking for general student freelancers to cover a variety of high school sports. Pay is $35 per story. DC-metro public relations firm hiring communications interns

Video journalism competition--$2,000 cash prize

Your video about lobbying and the First Amendment Could be Worth $2,000! The American League of Lobbyists is looking for broadcast journalism students to create a short video (3-5 minutes maximum) addressing the role that professional lobbyists play in supporting provisions contained in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that guarantee the right of citizens to petition their government.

All submissions must be received by the American League of Lobbyists no later than 5 PM ET October 15, 2010. Submissions received after that time will be returned and will not be entered in the contest. Expressions of interest to participate are requested by completing this formand returning it to the American League of Lobbyists by September 15, 2010.

WV Development Office seeks public information specialist

The WV Development Office is looking for a public information specialist to market the state’s travel, business, work force and natural resources. This is a full-time position in Charleston, W.Va. The ideal candidate should have a bachelors degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university with a major in communications, fine arts, journalism, graphic design, marketing, public relations, English or a related field.

The Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis, Mo., seeks a web and visual communications specialist. Westminster Christian Academy is an independent, coeducational school that enrolls 900 students in grades 7 to 12. The web and visual communications specialist is to up hold and advance the mission and vision of the school by responsibly providing effective service and leadership in the implementation of the its ongoing communications strategies. The position is appointed by the head of school with direct accountability to the director of advancement. The job is full-time based on a 12 month calendar, with four weeks of vacation during the summer months.
