Wordpress Developer: San Francisco

Salon.com a publicly-traded online news and social networking company headquartered in San Francisco, is currently looking for a talented, motivated individual who is passionate about independent news media, to join the technical engineering team.

This person will play a key role in the design and implementation of the content management and blogging systems.

This is a high visibility role within the company that demands excellent communication skills, as well as the demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration with non-technical project managers.

Required Experience:

  • 5-7 years hands on experience with object oriented PHP, using memcached and APC in high volume traffic environments (1M+ daily page views).
  • 3-5 years hands on experience with WordPress, using the API, developing plugins, developing themes and optimizing for high performance environments.
  • 2-3 years hands on experience using a relational database, with demonstrated experience using PLSQL, stored procedures and triggers.
  • 2-3 years hands on experience using MySQL 5.1 or later, including experience with replication and fail over scenarios.
  • Strong CSS skills. Also highly desirable to have XML and XSLT skills.
  • Strong Javascript skills, preferably using Prototype or JQuery.
  • A depth of experience using various web methodologies including SOAP, XMLRPC, AJAX
  • Experience using Subversion/Trac or similar version control software.

Looking for:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated abilities to write technical specifications based on functional specifications, clearly document code, and to communicate technical requirements on a non-technical level.
  • Background working on other magazine style on-line media sites, or group blogging sites with shared access controlled CMS.
  • Some previous work in at least one of the following: statistical analysis of text, pattern recognition programming, spam filtering technology, natural language processing, contextual or semantic search algorithms, CJK database/programming or automated credit card processing.
  • A Software Engineering degree or equivalent work experience.

Art desk internship: San Francisco

Salon’s art team is looking for interns to work in our San Francisco office. Art desk interns work closely with the art and edit staffs on daily production of the editorial content. The job entails a lot of photo editing, along with some original illustration and photo-composite work. Ideal candidates are students in photography or illustration, with strong Photoshop skills and an excellent eye. Time commitment is negotiable. Social Media Marketing Intern

Salon.com is looking for an enthusiastic social media maven to help expand its current social marketing activity. Working closely with the Product Marketing team, this position will afford the intern the ability to affect strategy and practice—making this a great resume-building experience. We’re looking for someone who knows the latest tools and trends that attract eyeballs. We want to know where the conversations are, and—most importantly—we want you to help us engage in those conversations.

The ideal person will possess the following skills:

  • Expert-level familiarity with Facebook and Twitter (the user interfaces)
  • Fast trend-watcher, via many different methods
  • Computer literate, particularly with Macs
  • Creativity: you know how to get people talking!
  • Organizational: you like keeping track of several things at once

Responsiblities may include:

  • Regularly updating Facebook fan pages of the various Salon Media Group brands, as well as key contributors
  • Regularly updating and monitoring the company Twitter accounts
  • Monitoring success, in order to help establish a set of best practices for staff around social media
  • Keeping track of the associated metrics: traffic, interactions, etc.
  • Keeping abreast of current events, breaking news, trending topics, etc., in order to ensure that the brand becomes part of the conversation
  • Liaising with Editorial, Product, and Sales teams, to foster communication around social media subjects

Product Management Internship: San Francisco

Salon.com is seeking an internship candidate with an avid interest in web development to assist the Product, Design and Engineering teams with daily operations, including specifications for site improvements and bug fixes, testing and QA. Must be extremely detail oriented with good project management skills and have at least working knowledge of HTML and the fundamentals of UI design. This position is based in San Francisco. Time commitment negotiable.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Assist with writing and tracking of engineering job tickets
  • Conduct routine QA and offer clear feedback to engineers
  • Be of general assistance to the Product team

Editorial Internships @ Salon

Interns are an important part of Salon’s daily editorial operations. They work closely with Salon staff to research, report, write and produce our news and culture coverage. They also take part in editorial meetings and otherwise learn about the day-to-day workings of an award-winning online news and entertainment site.
