Beeson named "Professor of the Year" by WVU's NAACP chapter

Associate Professor Joel Beeson

On Tuesday, April 19, WVU’s Center for Black Culture and Research and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted the NAACP Image Awards in the Moutainlair Ballrooms.

Among the 10 awards presented at the event, SOJ Associate Professor Joel Beeson received the Professor of the Year Award, which is given to an outstanding professor who has worked to actively improve the black community.

During the past year, Beeson has helped develop the Kimball War Memorial in McDowell county, W.Va. Beeson and his students installed an interactive exhibit, “Forgotten Legacy: Soldiers of the Coalfields,” which features historic photographs and artifacts and examines the story of African-Americans who migrated to McDowell County, W.Va., from the rural South in the early 1900s to work in the coal mines and who served in the U.S. military during wartime.

The winner of each award was chosen based on a closed voting process by active members of the NAACP.
