The P.I. Reed School of Journalism is seeking applicants for its Professional Mentorship Program.

The program offers SOJ juniors, seniors and graduate students the opportunity to be mentored by outstanding professionals in the fields of advertising, public relations, broadcasting, print, and multimedia journalism. Professionals can offer resume advice, networking opportunities, interview preparation, as well as an outlook on the current job market.

“Lincoln County Massacre” examines a controversial 1980 incident between two motorcycle clubs and the West Virginia State Police. The documentary retraces the events that led to the arrest of 15 people, the hospitalization of three and a federal lawsuit against the State Police. The film focuses on the members who founded the Brothers of the Wheel Motorcycle club in Milton, W.Va., and chronicles how the night in Lincoln County affected those who were present.

Patrick Felton, director of the “West Virginia Filmmakers Festival,” saw the value of this perspective and named “Lincoln County Massacre” as an official selection for the documentary feature competition of the festival, which runs from September 29 to October 2.

WVU graduate and undergraduate students are invited to present their work at Washington & Jefferson College’s upcoming Symposium on Rhetoric and Professional Writing

Students would be able to take a project they have completed in rhetoric or professional writing, adapt it to a poster, and submit that poster for display at the symposium. There will be an award for best poster, and students whose work is chosen for display would be able to include the symposium on their résumés.

The Boston Globe is inviting interns to work as staffers for summer 2012. The 12-week program gives students a chance to work for a major metropolitan newspaper, covering a variety of stories in their Metro, Business, Living/Arts, Health/Science and Sports sections, as well as shooting photos and video, designing pages and graphics for print and online, and copy editing.

An aptitude for newspaper work is the most important qualification for the internship. Applicants must have had at least one previous internship at a daily newspaper and possess a valid driver’s license.

WVU Student Organizations Services is currently accepting applications for participants in the 2011 Homecoming Parade.

The parade will take place on Friday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Participants will begin lining up at 5:45 p.m. There is no fee for non-profit and student organizations. All others will be required to pay $50.

West Virginia University will host its Annual Study Abroad Fair Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the WVU Mountainlair Blue & Gold Ballrooms. The Study Abroad Fair provides students with the initial contacts and information that have led students on their journey. According to the Office of International Programs, in 2010-2011 more than 800 WVU students traveled to another country for study abroad courses.

The Study Abroad Fair offers students a chance to discover opportunities and gather information from a range of study abroad representatives. It features more than 58 faculty-led spring and summer programs and 31 different WVU study abroad exchanges. Table displays will feature photos, facts, videos, brochures, and catalogues to help students better understand the programs. Local travel agencies and university staff will be available provide information on financial aid, travel arrangements, health insurance, foreign health requirements, and cultural activities.

Losing a loved one to cancer can affect people in many different ways. But for West Virginia University student Elizabeth Snyder, it gave her a passion to help other children affected by the disease through working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I saw my friend from high school get a wish granted before he passed away, which has inspired me to help get more wishes granted,” Snyder said. “I saw the happiness it gave him, and I want to be able to contribute to as many kids as possible.”

West Virginia University students interested in being named Mr. or Ms. Mountaineer can send in their applications over the next couple of weeks.

The award honors one male and one female student who have a record of academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. The competition requires the undergraduate or graduate applicant graduate in May 2012.
