The Tampa Bay Times, formerly the St. Petersburg Times, is seeking an experienced copy editor. They’re looking for an editor who can spot holes in stories, write top-notch headlines that will draw readers in print and online and be trusted to ensure the work is as close to perfect as humanly possible. You need a firm grasp of AP style, spelling and grammar, and you should be able to work with reporters, editors and others to make the story the best it can be. The ability to design pages is a plus, but is not mandatory. Hours include nights and weekends.
Among the duties and requirements:
Edits copy and writes display type.
Typically has up to five years of experience.
Grasp of how design and content work together to form cohesive packages.
Basic understanding of text editing system, photo system and other technical tools.
Knowledge of the news and subject.
Knows how to get information from the Internet and other sources
Technical editing skills (spelling, grammar, syntax, Times style).
Content editing skills (accuracy, libel, taste, tone, fairness, clarity, relevance, completeness, story structure and trimming).
Ability to meet deadlines.
Basic ability to delineate between significant and minor matters.
Ability to respond well to coaching.
