“Audience engagement editor” is a fairly new job title in most newsrooms. The role of an audience engagement editor is to build an audience by delivering news on multiple platforms, fostering conversation online among readers and using reader comments and contributions in stories.

On Tuesday, October 21, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s first audience engagement editor, Jacob Quinn Sanders, will visit Martin Hall to talk about his role in the newsroom. His presentation, “Audience Engagement: Your wants but their needs,” will focus on what every communicator needs to know about building a lasting two-way commitment with an audience.

Sanders’ presentation is co-sponsored by the WVU Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Reed College of Media. It will begin at 7 p.m. in 205 Martin Hall and is free and open to the public.

Sanders’ professional life has taken him to Nevada, California, Oregon, Arkansas and—twice—Pennsylvania. He served as breaking-news editor at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette before becoming its first audience engagement editor. He also covered the natural gas industry for the b2b digital publication Gas Business Briefing, law enforcement for the Portland Tribune and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, local government in the deserts of the Southwest and a little bit of everything for the Philadelphia Inquirer. He also occasionally writes about food and drink. He likes mounds of public records, digital and content strategy and building things that solve problems new and old.
