International Conference on Sport and Society

The 2010 Sport and Society Conference will address a range of critically important issues and themes relating to the Sport and Society. Plenary speakers will include leading thinkers and practitioners in the sports, as well as paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by researchers and practitioners in all fields of sport and kinesiology. The conference will take place between the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This year’s conference features the following plenary speakers:

  • Robert K. Barney, University of Western Ontario, Canada.
  • Richard Pound, Director of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
  • Patricia Vertinsky, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
  • Barbara Evans, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

Sports marketing veteran, Barbara Emener Karasek (current PGA TOUR’s Director of Corporate Marketing), is moderating a panel on Monday, March 8th entitled “Purpose Driven Sport: The Art of Giving Back and Building Legacies,” an engaging discussion on the purpose of sport and its long term impact on the constituents and communities served. Panelists include Bruce Dewar, CEO of VANOC’s 2010 Legacies Now, Debbie Butt, NHL’s Vancouver Canucks Director of Community Partnership and Executive Director for Canucks for Kids Fund, Milos Vranesevic, MasterCard Canada, and others to be announced shortly.

In addition to plenary presentations and the panel discussion, the Sport and Society Conference includes parallel presentations by researchers, teachers and practitioners. We invite you to respond to the conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters submit their written papers for publication in the refereed International Journal on Sport and Society. If you are unable to attend the conference in person, virtual registrations are also available, which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 11 February 2010. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission.
