College of Media celebrates graduates; top students honored

Loughery speaks at commencement

WVU Reed College of Media graduates were celebrated alongside graduates of the College of Creative Arts during the joint commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at the WVU Coliseum.

More than 180 College of Media graduates attended the ceremony, earning bachelor’s degrees in Advertising and Public Relations, Game Design and Interactive Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, Journalism, Multidisciplinary Media Studies, and Sports and Adventure Media, and master’s degrees in Data Marketing Communications, Digital Marketing Communications, Integrated Marketing Communications, and Journalism.

West Virginia University Reed College of Media students placed in four categories, including two first-place wins, at the international Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts. This year, BEA received nearly 1,900 submissions from more than 300 participating schools.

Hunner Moore awarded Virginia AP Broadcasters Scholarship

Hunner Moore

Hunner Moore, a West Virginia University Reed College of Media sophomore from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, was one of two recipients of the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Scholarship. Moore accepted her award during a formal luncheon at The Greenbrier Resort on March 23.

“This award is not just an honor, it is a responsibility, and I pledge to utilize it to make a positive impact on the world around me,” Moore said during her acceptance speech. “This recognition means more than words can convey.”

Five alumni recognized with Reed College of Media awards

Each year the Reed College of Media seeks nominations and presents alumni awards, including those that recognize lifetime achievement, philanthropic support, service to the College, and demonstrated success within the first 10 years post-graduation. This year’s recipients were recognized at the WVU Reed College of Media’s Spring Honors Ceremony on April 26. The 2023–24 awardees include Shelly Poe (BSJ, 1985), Jacelyn Swenson (BSJ, 1981), Col. Tom Boyd (BSJ, 1971), Joe Webb (BSJ, 1990) and Jennifer Clarke (BSJ, 2015).

The most prestigious alumni award is the P.I. Reed Achievement Award, which was created in 1966 to recognize outstanding professional achievements. This year’s recipients are Shelly Poe and Jacelyn Swenson.
