Job Location: Missoula , Mont., US .

Work Schedule: Full-time, 12 months/year, 1 FTE
Minimum Entry Rate: $14.075-$14.990/hr.

Under the supervision and direction of the Montana Public Radio New Director, this position produces daily new reports on legislative and state news for broadcast on Montana Public Radio. Working out of an office in the state capitol, the Bureau Chief will follow legislative committee hearings and debates. Duties include but are not limited to: tracking important state news, conducting interviews, writing, editing and producing new stories under the director of the News Director; assessing news value of state government issues and policy developments; representing Montana Public Radio to newsmakers and the public; posting stories, audio, photos and promos online.
Position will demonstrate: strong recording, interviewing, and digital audio editing skills; knowledge of journalism ethics and standards of objectivity, fairness and balance; excellent speaking and writing skills; ability to research and comprehend complex issues, and translate those issues into clear, concise news reports; current knowledge of social media tools and protocols; ability to maintain a professional demeanor and behavior and ability to interact with diverse groups.

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of journalism ethics and standards of objectivity, fairness, and balance
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in recording, interviewing, digital audio editing and researching with the ability to translate information into clear and concise news reports for broadcast
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional office practices and procedures; business English, spelling, composition, and grammar, including the ability to edit materials
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers and related word processing software with the ability to learn new software (Including but not limited to: professional software for digital audio, editing, digital recording and on-line transmittal of audio files)
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills and ability to meet deadlines with attention to detail
  • Effective, public relations, interpersonal, and communication skills, including ability to speak clearly and work with diverse group of individuals while maintaining a professional demeanor

Required Experience:

  • Bachelors of Arts in Radio/TV, Journalism or related field and at least one (1) year related work experience
