Photography editor and media consultant MaryAnne Golon is well known for discovering talent and placing photojournalists in assignments that fit their niche.
Golon, the former director of photography at TIME magazine, will give WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism students an insider’s perspective on the industry when she visits campus next week.
During her presentation, “21st Century Photojournalism: Branding, Multimedia and Social Networking,” Golon will discuss how she finds emerging photographers for projects and how those photographers market themselves. The presentation will be on Monday, November 7, at 7 p.m., in Room G11 of the WVU Life Sciences Building.
Golon was TIME magazine’s director of photography until June 30, 2008. She co-managed the photography department of the newsweekly for 15 years. Among her professional contributions to TIME, Golon led the photography team that produced the Hurricane Katrina special edition and the September 11, 2001, special black-bordered edition, each winning National Magazine Awards for single-issue topics.
She is currently the consulting director of photography and multimedia for AARP, the largest non-profit association in the world providing for the needs of Americans over 50 years old.
In addition, Golon has served on the boards and juries of high-profile photojournalism forums, including nomination and selection juries for VisaPour L’Image, Perpignan, France, and World Press Photo Foundation’s Masterclass in Amsterdam.
