City of Morgantown seeks public communications interns

The City of Morgantown is seeking interns to perform public communications duties.

Duties & Responsibilities 
As Public Communications Interns for the City of Morgantown, students will learn about the role of a municipal public communications manager. This multifaceted job covers many concentrations, including:

  • Maintaining MorgantownWV.gov, disseminating town news and promoting events
  • Updating Program Information for Departments, Boards, Commissions, agencies, Election, City Council
  • Administering Comcast Channel 15, Morgantown’s Government Access Channel
  • Recording and airing live meetings and scheduling playback according to a programming schedule
  • Creating weekly information videos on civic matters and programs, called the Morgantown Minute
  • Promoting proclamations and recognition at council meetings with News Now
  • Managing slides that give information and updates on local meetings, city programs, BOPARC events, and more
  • Updating Social media for the city, including Facebook and Twitter
  • Maintaining iTunes – where we post audio podcasts of each city meeting
  • Maintaining YouTube – where we share Morgantown Minutes, News Now, and PSAs
  • Maintaining Vertical Response – monthly eNewsletters
  • Performing Media Relations tasks as needed
  • Writing press releases and sharing with local media outlets
  • Helping to find contacts for stories
  • Introducing new reporters and journalism students to civic leaders
  • Potential Weekly Goals: 
    Week 1: Introduction, Meet civic leaders, learn relationship to each city department, relationship with other agencies (Museums, BOPARC, Theatres, etc.), and relationship to Neighborhood Associations and Wards 
    Week 2: Media relations 
    Week 3: The City Online 
    Week 4: Channel 15 
    Week 5 6: Student(s) will select an area of concentration and carry through the responsibilities of that area for the last two weeks. 
    This might include writing press releases and working with media, producing a Morgantown Minute and managing Channel 15, managing the eNewsletter, administrate social media, etc.
