SOJ Alumna Elaine McMillion (BSJ, 2009) will launch her interactive documentary, “Hollow,” on June 20 – West Virginia’s 150th statehood celebration. “Hollow” examines the issues of people living in post-industrial rural America through the eyes and voices of the residents of McDowell County, W.Va. The immersive, online experience combines video portraits, user-generated content, data, grassroots mapping and soundscapes on an HTML5 site.
In addition to McMillion, the “Hollow” team includes designers, programmers, journalists and filmmakers – including two SOJ alumni. Tricia Fulks (BSJ, 2009) served as a copywriter and researcher for the project, and Megan Bowers (BSJ, 2009) was the story editor.
If you anticipate graduating in August 2013, you must complete the online graduation application by June 26, 2013. All graduation applications must be received by this date to ensure an audit can be completed before the second summer session begins. Students who have previously applied for graduation, but whose degree was not granted must resubmit a graduation application. Beginning this summer, all graduation applications must be submitted via a new online application process. This process is easy and efficient, and should only take a few minutes. Paper graduation applications will no longer be accepted.
If you will not complete all degree requirements by August please do not submit a graduation application at this time. Only students who will complete all requirements by the end of the second summer session are eligible for August graduation.
This position works with the Director and/or Assistant Director in planning, administering and implementing programs and activities that relate to African and African American cultural enrichment on the WVU campus and in the broader community. The coordinator will also provide services and programs at the Center for Black Culture and Research that support and promote the academic success of students at WVU.

Google will beta test its new device, Glass, in the coming months, and two projects at the WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism have been selected to participate.

Aggressive, nationally recognized newsroom is seeking a motivated, aggressive digital journalist candidate! Under the supervision of the Evening Anchor and News Director the Digital Journalist is responsible for gathering all of the necessary information to tell the story of a news event. This includes information about the news event, interviewing the necessary parties, choosing and shooting the appropriate video segments to help tell the story, and preparing a script that accurately depicts the news event. In addition, the Digital Journalist will be required to present the news story on-air from the station or from a remote location. Further, the Digital Journalist may be required to perform other duties, such as a backing up Anchors and writing scripts for cut-ins.
Annually, NABJ awards deserving students interested in pursuing a career in journalism awards of more than $30,000 in NABJ scholarships. Each scholarship is worth up to $5,000. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born students, currently attending an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.
To be considered and to receive a scholarship, all applicants must be a member of NABJ. The requirements make up one complete packet for this program. Students who want to apply for the program must submit four complete packets to the national office.
The West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transit system annual maintenance period is being extended through mid-June. Normal PRT summer hours will resume June 17.
Maintenance began after the spring semester for a variety of electrical projects and non-critical structural repairs to the guideway and infrastructure. The purpose of the repairs is to conduct long-term preventive maintenance of the system in an effort to improve the functionality and reliability of the service. Since those efforts have begun, several additional non-critical structural/concrete repairs have been discovered that will require additional time to remediate.
The INTEGRATE 2013 conference was held in Morgantown, WV on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1, 2013.
