WVU School of Journalism honors outstanding alumni

WVU President Jim Clements welcomed guests and joined School of Journalism Dean Maryanne Reed in honoring the award recipients.

Paige Lavender (BSJ, 2011) received the School’s Young Alumnus Award, which recognizes an alum who has demonstrated great professional promise in a short amount of time. The award is given to a graduate working in the field 10 years or less. Lavender, currently the Senior Politics Editor at The Huffington Post, began working there as an associate politics editor shortly after graduation. She covers Congress, the president and political news around the nation.

WVU Fall break scheduled for Oct. 14-15

West Virginia University students and instructors will have a chance to relax during a new fall break on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 14-15). All residence halls will stay open, however classes will not be held on those two days.

Fall break was designed to give students a break from classes in the middle of a busy semester. It will also enable some students to catch up on their studies, work and sleep – to allow them to get back on track for the remainder of the semester.

WVU journalism and business schools join to offer business administration class in strategic communications

West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism and College of Business and Economics are partnering to offer a master’s in business administration-level course in strategic communications.

The two schools are the latest to join the initiative launched by the Public Relations Society of America, the largest of professional organization serving the country’s public relations community. As part of the School of Journalism’s ongoing partnership with PRSA, the School’s Integrated Marketing Communications master’s program is developing the MBA-level course through the collaborative partnership with the College of Business and Economics.

WVU PRSSA to sell tacos for fundraiser--Oct. 8

WVU PRSSA will hold a Taco in the Bag fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in front of the Mountainlair. Passersby may purchase a Taco in a Bag for $2.00, which includes a choice of Doritos, Fritos and toppings such as taco meat, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, taco sauce and tomatoes.

All proceeds will help send the chapter to the 2013 PRSSA National Conference in Philadelphia, PA from Oct. 25-29.”

PR students launch campaign to promote manufacturing careers statewide

A group of West Virginia University students is applying the skills they’re learning in the classroom to bring awareness to manufacturing programs and job opportunities in West Virginia.

Ten senior public relations students in the P.I. Reed School of Journalism are working with the West Virginia Manufacturers Association, along with public schools and community and technical colleges in Kanawha, Putnam, Cabell and Mason counties. The campaign aims to bring attention to the abundance of unfilled jobs in the manufacturing field and the lack of young professionals who possess the skills to fill these vacancies.

Parents Club, Maniacs host watch party for WVU football game

West Virginia University football fans can gather for a watch party on Saturday (Oct. 5) when the No. 17 Baylor Bears host the Mountaineers in Texas.

The Mountaineer Parents Club is partnering with the Mountaineer Maniacs to host the party in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

WVU journalism alumna establishes fund for strategic communications majors

After working more than three decades in corporate communications, West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism alumna Betsy Klebe Dziedzic is helping students who are traveling down the same career path.

The Jim and Betsy Klebe Dziedzic Career Development Fund was established by her and her husband to assist strategic communications majors who intern in corporate or business communications positions. Dziedzic established the fund to encourage students to gain hands-on experience in strategic communications in a business environment.
