Multiple openings for staff editors at The New York Times

The News Presentation Department at The New York Times has multiple openings for staff editors on the copy desks and in digital production, based in New York.
Ideal candidates for these jobs should have at least five years of experience editing news articles on deadline in a daily newsroom. All candidates must pass a Times editing test and a newsroom tryout. Candidates must be proficient in grammar and usage, understand the application of house style, have a strong grasp of current events, be able to identify material that may need to be checked for accuracy and know how to make the checks, and demonstrate creativity in the writing of headlines and other display type. You should know how to fix a troubled story with skill and diplomacy, with no damage to the writer’s voice. We expect a deep understanding of sound journalistic practice and ethics.

Applicants should have experience using publishing systems for all platforms, and candidates for digital production jobs should have technical proficiency beyond the basics. Experience editing multimedia, such as audio and video, and experience using social media for journalism is preferred.

While reporting and writing experience is advantageous, it is not a replacement for the required editing and production experience. Note that these positions do not typically lead to reporting or writing jobs. Staff editors do move on to editing positions on the home page and on assigning desks.

These are Guild positions based in New York City, with competitive salaries and benefits. Valid working papers for the United States are required. Expect to work nights, weekends and holidays, and, in some cases, overnight shifts. Typical first assignments will be on the desks that edit national, international, metro New York, Business or Sports news.

To apply, please send a current résumé, three references and links to work samples to news-jobs@nytimes.com, marked to the attention of Patrick LaForge, Editor, News Presentation. An automatic reply from that address provides more information about the test and tryout process. Please do not send inquiries about these positions to other email addresses at The Times.
