The 2014 Fall “WVU News” anchors have been announced. They are (from left) sports anchor Jimmy Zito of Glenelg, Maryland; main anchor Kiley Putnam of Cromwell, Connecticut; co-anchors James Scott and Whitley Rose, both of Morgantown, West Virginia; and sports anchor Brandon Vansickel of Wilmington, Delaware.

STCM 459 will offer a unique semester capstone class with a one-week study abroad opportunity in Brazil during Spring Break. Partners in this exciting project include a non-profit organization concerned with breast cancer, Porter Novelli and one of Brazil’s top hospitals. Preference given to seniors enrolling in STCM 459, but graduate students and juniors also will be considered.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is honoring Michael Ploger (BSJ, 2013) for his outstanding work in television sports photography. Ploger won first place in the national competition for his story, WVU Gymnastics Success. Winners were announced this past weekend during the Excellence in Journalism Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Ploger’s story aired on “WVU News” during the spring 2013 semester.

SORTS (Students on the Road to Success) seminars are designed to offer tips on academic success in a group setting. Topics include classroom success, time management, preparing for finals, and many more. Presentations are interactive and students receive giveaways that aid in student success.

Students in Assistant Professor Alison Bass’ Investigative Reporting class and Assistant Professor Bob Britten’s Interactive Design and Data Visualization class will collaborate with New York Times reporter Derek Willis to collect data about West Virginia voter behavior and compare it to the campaign messages residents receive. The goal is to provide a more nuanced understanding of what influences voter behavior over time at the hyper-local level.

Willis is the WVU Reed College of Media’s newest Ogden Newspapers Innovator-in-Residence. He writes about congressional behavior, campaign finance and other topics for The Upshot, a New York Times politics and policy site and was a member of The Times’ Interactive News desk, where he built and maintained political databases used in web applications. He will spend the fall semester working with students to analyze micro-level data in the West Virginia Senate race between Republican Shelley Moore Capito and Democrat Natalie Tennant.

POSITION SUMMARY:The Anchor/Reporter position will be primarily responsible for anchoring news programs, assisting with the production of the program as determined by the show’s Producer(s), setting up, producing, and reporting segments for news programs, and participating in the community activities and promotion efforts of the station. This individual will also participate in the public affairs activities of the station and must be a good communicator, work well with others, and be able to take direction from management regarding job performance and on-air appearance.

ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced Education in the field of Broadcast Journalism or equivalent broadcasting work experience, which has prepared the applicant to perform the required functions of the job. Demonstration of skills by performance in audition or aircheck, supported by references and pre-employment interviews. Available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and for extended periods of overtime, if needed. Able to control high stress periods and heavy workload. Valid Virginia Driver’s license within 30 days of employment. Knowledge of journalistic standards as they relate to on-air presentation of news stories. Accurate and comprehensive writing skills. Ability to act and react appropriately on camera. Ability to maintain professional personal appearance. Ability to lift and transport standard camera equipment. Available to travel overnight to off-site locations, including foreign destinations, for extended periods of time, if needed. Access to an automobile if needed for transportation.
