Scholarship opportunity for television journalism students

The Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters group has a scholarship available for students pursuing a career in broadcast/television journalism. The candidate must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at a college or university in Virginia or West Virginia at the time of the application deadline of March 1, 2015.

The $500 scholarship is awarded every other year and the recipient is invited to attend the annual Virginias AP Broadcast awards lunch. The annual luncheon typically attracts nearly 100 working broadcast journalists representing all types of jobs in the field—from news directors to sportscasters to videographers to web managers and general managers. The luncheon recognizes Virginia and West Virginia stations for their best work of 2014 and includes categories such as Best Newscast, Documentary, Feature, Play-by-Play, etc.

This year’s event is being held Saturday, March 28, at the Omni in Charlottesville, Virginia.

New this year, The group is offering a workshop prior to the luncheon specifically for college students about how to break into the broadcast news business. It will cover the basics such as how to make your reel and resume stand out, how to get a mentor, reach news directors and where to start your search. The student cost to attend the seminar and luncheon is $35.
