THE POSITION

The West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office is seeking a Public Affairs Specialist. Selected candidate will be a reliable and energetic individual to assist the press shop by utilizing creative, written and technical skills promoting the programs and function of this office.

Creative/Written 
• Prepare talking points, reports, fact sheets, blogs, press releases, speeches, presentations and other informational and briefing materials to educate diverse audiences about the Secretary of State’s mission and accomplishments. 
• Assist in reviewing documentation in the draft and final stages to provide recommendations to staff for improvements to include readability, comprehension, accuracy, completeness, redundancy, formatting, grammar, possible contradictions and compliance with WV State Code. 
• Produce and update printed materials in Publisher, InDesign and/or Photoshop. 
• Develop public affairs materials. 
• Coordinate and implement outreach events and travel, when needed, as a representative for the Secretary of State’s Office. 
• Serve as a point of contact for the outside media and other government and non-government organizations.

Video/Photography/Website 
• Utilize still and video cameras to capture images relevant to the Secretary of State’s operation and share the content with the public through social media and the Office’s website. 
• Edit, condense and produce video/audio projects in Adobe Premiere. 
• Setup and manage public webcasts. 
• Create and manage website content, blogs, tweets and other social media content on behalf of the Secretary of State’s Office. 
• Experience writing speeches, press releases and other media materials. 
• Video shooting and editing. 
• Other special projects and duties as assigned.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Location: Capitol Complex, Building 1, Suite 157 K, Charleston, West Virginia

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• 4-year degree in communications related program, or equivalent work experience. 
• Approximately 20 percent travel required.
