The Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program is now accepting applications for spring and summer interns. The application deadline is Nov. 2. Semester in Washington brings journalism students to D.C. for reporting internships of four, 10 or 14 weeks. The program, now in its 11th year, is one of the few in Washington that not only pays a stipend but also provides free housing in furnished apartments.
Interns report for Scripps Howard’s Web-based wire and can report for campus or hometown newspapers or other news organizations. The interns work with an experienced Washington editor to choose, report and edit stories. This summer, interns covered Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings, a bill signing ceremony at the White House, debates over health care and cap and trade legislation, Iraqi refugees, Palestinian hip hop artists, the future of space travel, changes in the student loan program and more. In the spring, they covered President Obama’s inauguration and the first days of the new administration.
